Prince George, BC – It was an electrifying win for the Prince George Spruce Kings, as fans almost blew the roof off the Coliseum when the hometown team beat the no-longer Victorious Vees 5-2 to close out the regular season.
Another sell-out crowd packed the stands for tonight’s re-match. Last night, the Kings held the lead until the third period, when Penticton came back to score four unanswered goals for an 8-5 victory – their 42nd consecutive win (a North American winning streak record), and 53rd of the season, which set a BCHL record. Tonight’s game appeared to be shaping up the same way, with the two teams tied 1-1 after the first and 2-2 after 40-minutes of play. However, Spruce Kings’ goalie Ty Swabb stole the show in the final period, shutting the door to the Vees. Prince George scored three unanswered goals in the final 20-minutes, including a pair from Michael Colantone.
Spruce Kings’ Director of Communications, Ron Gallo, says it’s just been an unbelieveable weekend. He says the atmosphere inside the castle was "electrifying", with the players feeding off of the fans. He says everyone is riding a complete high and it was an amazing way to wrap up the regular season.
With the win, Prince George finishes in third spot in the Interior Divison and will play the second-place, Merritt Centennials, in the first round of the play-offs, starting on Friday and Saturday in Merrit. Games three and four go in Prince George on Monday the 19th and Tuesday the 20th. Tickets will be available at the Treasure Cove Casino tomorrow and at the Spruce Kings office on Monday.
