"Punks" Cause A Fuss At Kin Centre Hockey Game

Saturday, March 17, 2012 @ 10:25 AM
Prince George, B.C. – There will be a more visible security presence at tonight’s BCMML playoff hockey game between the Cariboo Cougars and the Vancouver NE Chiefs following an incident at last night’s contest at Kin 1.

A fan at the game and Cariboo Cougars play-by-play announcer Jeff Sargeant say that a Vancouver player cross-checked a Cougars player in the throat and was tossed out of the game. Three teenagers from the stands went down to the change room to go after that player, but left shortly afterwards. Sargeant says he did not see the dressing room incident but the police were there, including an off-duty officer, to deal with the situation.

Cariboo Cougars Manager Andy Beesley, who is also the CN Centre and Community Arenas Manager, says the incident at the dressing room was over quickly and the three teens left the building. Beesley says the Cariboo Cougar organization is 100% volunteer, including the security at the games. He says they had 11 volunteers at last night’s game, although they weren’t wearing security vests because they, by law, are not allowed to. (The law states you can’t call yourself “security” unless you are OFFICIAL security)   However Beesley says the team does “ten times what the other teams do to make their security at games safe. I don’t know what more we could have done.” He says the security aspect will have a more visible presence tonight to make everyone feel secure. And he says “these three punks will not be welcome at games or our facilities in the future.”

Beesley also says the RCMP talked with Chiefs officials and they do not want to pursue the matter further.

The Vancouver player who did the cross-checking got a match penalty and will not be playing tonight.
