Prince George, B.C.- The Otway Nordic Cross Country Ski club has received from the Province $416,913.00 towards upgrades to the ski centre . The grant represents 80% of the application request, with the Canada Winter Games Host society picking up the tab for about $110,000.
The full planned upgrades to the Nordic Centre on Otway could be in the $2-2.5 million dollar range with a new ski waxing area, shooting range for biathlon events, penalty loop and possibly two over passes so spectators can get to trail side without having to actually cross the ski trails.
The funds announced today are over and above the capital dollars already promised the Winter Games Society to allow the Society to meet the Games standards . This additional funding will add more to the Nordic centre without having to dig deeper into the Games Capital budget.

Otway rocks already, but this is going to be awesome!

This is wonderful news. Otway is an incredible jewel in our community. I would like to see some summertime enhancements as well. The riding and running trails out there are fantastic but there’s always room for improvement.

That place has really grown over the years. Great to have so close to town. Nice to see it is also being used over the summer.

Is parking a problem there? I really do not use it since I dislike skiing/snowshoing in someone else’s tracks and I just have to ski out my patio to directtly access a park and a large “informal” trail system connecting to Moore’s Meadow and beyond.

The last time I was there was a couple of years ago and it seemed to me they could have sued a bit more parking. I would think that for events it gets crowded.

So what do you race, BC Racer?

Our recreational facilities promote healthier lifestyles and actually improve the well-being of our children, our seniors and reduce the burden on our health care system. I do not want to eliminate one at the expense of another. We need both.

Good call Chester. Education is not just limited to sitting in a classroom regurgitating data, it can take many forms.
The Otway upgrades will be a great benefit to an already great multi use area
and a boost to the PG area in promoting
us as a place to hold national or international events.
It will be sad to see some of Dr. Hagens’ trails disappear, but sacrifice for the greater good.

Otway was a fantastic facility twenty years ago, this can only make it better. Like Gus says though, what about the parking? They will have to utilize a bus service for the Games I would assume.
