$14.3 Million Transportation Work Set for Burns Lake Region

Burns Lake, B.C.- The Ministry of Transportation has announced it will be spending $14.3 million dollars on 14 different highway infrastructure projects in the Burns Lake region.
Over half of this investment will be made in the Burns Lake area, and nearly $1 million is targeted for day labour projects that will use local labour and equipment in an effort to help Burns Lake families recover from the loss of the Babine Forest Products sawmill.
The projects range from improving sight lines by removing brush and trees along rights-of-way, to major resurfacing work. The largest of the projects will be the resurfacing of Highway 16 from the Tintagel Rest Area to Endako, a distance of just over 40 km.
"This is an important year for highway construction in our region, not only for the safety improvements to our roads, but for the jobs and income these projects generate” says Nechako Lakes MLA John Rustad. “The dollars spent by construction crews in the region will be especially welcome, and we’ve made a special effort to ensure that day labour will be used where possible, so that local equipment operators and workers can also benefit from these projects."
The majority of projects will begin to go to tender this month, and all work is expected to be complete by fall 2012.

Excellent news for Burns Lake. $14.3 million and it is being fasttracked. Go to tender right away, all projects to be completed by this fall. That’s great for Burns Lake and I don’t take anything away from that.
On my cynical side, see, there is money for things like, oh, education. It only need be pulled off the shelf that currently houses it. There will be money to be trotted out of the never-ending pot when the election campaign gets rolling.
And so it goes…..
Once again the liberals worry about the businesses and not the workers who are now trying to servive without a paycheck.
Good to see some work done on the Highway. In addition work for people in the Burns Lake area.
Drove to Quesnel the other day. Not a pothole in sight on those highways that go through that awful winter/spring freeze thaw cycle with heavy truck traffic. In fact, there was very little frost heaving â¦. yet. And, whatever kind of expansion/contraction cracks there were, they were certainly not all that visible and not felt at all if any were there.
Highway paving technology is absolutely amazing under this, oh so unique winter conditions.
So the businesses don’t require workers? We must of read different articles.
Who is this John Rustad guy?
Any improvement on hiway 16 west would be great for tourism and it is a beautiful drive. I sure hope that Enbridge doesn’t go through that area as it is pristiene and beautifull beyond description.

Well nobody can say Rustad never did anything for them after this huge infusion of money. :-)
I thought Highway 16 is federal and not provincial… what is the province doing funding a federal highway… or is John just taking credit for federal spending in his riding?
