Prince George, B.C. – The World Baseball Challenge held in Prince George is in the running for three of five Canadian Sport Tourism Prestige Awards.
 
The WBC is a finalist in the categories which name one of the key organizers, major sponsor, and the event itself  as finalists.
 
The nominees are:

International Sport Event of the Year

2011 World Baseball Challenge (Prince George, BC)• 2011 Ford World Men’s Curling Championships (Regina, SK)
• ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating Finals 2011 (Quebec City, Quebec)

Community Service Award

Jim Swanson (Prince George, BC)
• Amanda Jacinthe Hamel (Charlottetown, PEI)
• Judith Tutty (Welland, ON)
 

Sport Event Sponsor of the Year Award

Toronto Blue Jays (World Baseball Challenge)• Petro-Canada, A Suncor Energy Business (Petro-Canada Sport Leadership sportif Conference)
• Dakota Dunes Casino (Dakota Dunes Casino Open: Canadian PGA Tour)
 
The PRESTIGE ( which stands for Program Recognizing Exceptional Sport Tourism Initiatives, Games and Events) Award winners will be honoured at a gala luncheon  at the River Rock Casino in Richmond on April 19th.
The World Baseball Challenge Chair, Jim Swanson is in the running for the Community Service Award this year, however, this is not the first time the WBC leaders have been in the finals for this award.   Co-chair, Shawn Rice, was a finalist for the same award in 2010.

Although Jim Swanson is deserving of recognition for his effort, I think these awards are all about putting another plaque on the ‘brag wall’ in other words, meaningless.

Congrats to Jim and the whole crew…an event this size is alot of work, completed mainly by volunteers. Enjoy the hard earned recognition.

Yes congratulations to Jim Swanson and all the many volunteers who made the WBC a success. Next time you bring it, I will buy a tournament pass and take a week off work to watch. Yes, it was that good!
