Library’s SkyLab Creates A Spectacle Today

Prince George, BC – Look up, waaaay up today, as the Prince George Public Library’s SkyLab project swings into high gear…
Before first light this morning, library staff will be working with IDL Projects to remove several windows in the southeast corner of the second floor of the Bob Harkins branch – in the magazine and newspaper corner – so steel beams can be brought inside.
The trickier part of the venture involves closing one of the two westbound lanes of Patricial Boulevard in front of the library from first light until sometime this afternoon to allow a crane to hoist the beams up to the balcony and carefully swing them into the library.
"The current weather forecast is for eight degrees and sunny for Monday," says chief librarian Allan Wilson. "The library will be open at 10am as usual and it will be a little cooler than normal upstairs, but it will be quite the sight to see for everyone."
When finished later this spring, SkyLab will add nearly 1,000 square feet of new space for public access to computers and the internet. The upper level of the SkyLab is a mezzanine floating above the second floor – Wilson says seating around the sides will let library users read and enjoy the amazing views both inside and outside the library.
