Mackenzie, B.C.- With the Provincial grant of $605,220.00 in hand, the work can begin on the upgrades to the Mackenzie Recreation Centre.
The grant was announced on Saturday during the Canucks Alumni game that drew a capacity crowd to the Recreation Centre.
The full proposed project is valued at just over $1,200,000.00. The District will use Federal Gas Tax funds it will receive as the District’s portion of the funding, and the District will also be applying for additional funding as the project develops over the next two years.
The first stage of work to begin very soon is the Feasibility Study that Mackenzie Council funded in the 2012 budget, to determine the future of the Recreation Center as a whole. That work will include more consultation with those who use the Rec Centre.
Detailed design work would be completed once the feasibility study is completed. There are considerable facility infrastructure upgrades that are required as part of the project and must be completed before any new construction can get underway.
The grant received from the Province is expected to cover the following costs:
- Construction of a 2000 sq foot addition (on the players bench south side of the arena proposed).
- New construction to include two new dressing rooms with shower/washroom facilities built to modern arena standards.
- Facilities will be designed and constructed to meet the needs of both male and female use. Each dressing room will be approximately 800 sq feet, (double the size of each of 4 existing dressing rooms) A corridor area of 400 square feet will connect new dressing rooms with existing building. Construction, plumbing. fixtures, electrical and HVAC systems will be to energy efficient standards.
- Improve building comfort and energy efficiency by insulating the 25,000 sq feet of attic space.
- Improve building comfort, energy efficiency and improve ascetic appearance by insulating a panel of 5500 sq feet of interior arena walls.
- As the space will be sealed for energy efficiency and old ventilation fans decommissioned a Dehumidification unit will be installed (arena dehumidification assists in reducing energy efficiency and maintaining quality ice).
- Install a heat exchanger and heat pump system (recovering heat from the refrigeration plant) to pre-heat water for ice resurfacing and new dressing room showers.
- Upgrade existing arena lighting fixtures (36 units). Current illumination measures between 100-300 LUX.
- Upgrade to include aluminium (downward pointing) reflectors, energy efficient electronic ballasts to bring illumination levels to the 500 LUX recommended by Hockey Canada.
The new construction must be completed by March 15, 2015 under this grant program (works installed during the 2014 construction season).
