Prince George, B.C. – Two Prince George women have been officially recognized for their efforts to help a woman and her two children following a vehicle crash on Highway 16 east last November.
Christine McComber and Angela Pigeon were heading to Alberta on Remembrance Day last year, hauling a horse trailer with three horses on board when they saw a truck parked on the side of the highway. McComber says she and Angela were trying to decide if they should turn back because of the deteriorating weather conditions when they spotted the truck and a car that was in the ditch.
The two women pulled over and went down the embankment where they found a family of three in distress and shock. “The boy in the back was only wearing a T-shirt and had the shakes,” says Christine “The mother and daughter were upset because they had lost their glasses in the accident but we found one pair.”
The injured family had also been en route to Alberta in two vehicles to help friends with a move. The father was driving the truck parked at the scene of the accident and had called 911 for emergency assistance.
“We had clean horse blankets up in the trailer, so we covered everyone up in order to keep them warm,” said Christine.
BCAS paramedic Jim Vanderploeg says when he and his partner arrived on the scene, “We found two ladies providing aid and comfort to the family. They even helped us carry our emergency medical equipment up and down the embankment. We could not have asked for better help from bystanders than we got with Christine and Angela.”
Both Christine and Angela were given Good Samaritan awards today at the BCAS station on Edmonton Street.
