CNC Continues to Trim to Balance Budget

Friday, March 30, 2012 @ 3:01 PM
Prince George, B.C. – The College of New Caledonia cannot say how many staff will actually face layoff, but it is certain there will be fewer employees on campus when the 2012/2013 school year starts.

The College made a presentation to its Board of Directors this afternoon, outlining the steps it is taking to address what had been expected to be a $2.3 million dollar shortfall.

“We are still working through some final decisions and options with a number of employees regarding early retirements and voluntary severances,” says CNC President John Bowman, “Therefore, it’s too soon to say the final numbers of employees actually receiving layoff notices, but the numbers are expected to be small. Most reductions will be accomplished through attrition, early retirement incentives and voluntary severance.”

Other cost-saving measures include: a 2% tuition increase, reallocating unused budget amounts in a number of areas; including additional and deferred revenues; some consolidation of low enrolment class sections and courses; improved class scheduling and reductions to equipment expenditures.

Bowman says there is still some work to be done, but he expects to present a balanced budget to the Board on April 27th.

Colleges are required by provincial legislation to plan for a balanced budget every year.

So wake up government and start funding the college. Maybe Canfor could pitch in some cash instead of trying to start up their own school.

Oh forgot to mention that they need to find some big cash to fix the New Trade building ventilation that wasn’t done properly. They are still teaching the welding classes in the old building. Doh!

Maybe a few of those 6 figure salaries could be cut back a bit. Or the people making $40-$50/hr just because they have been there for 10 or 15 years. Another example of unions out of control with wage demands. Depts with 6 people doing the job of 1 and then there are depts with 1 person doing the job of 6. Total insanity and unaccountability.

To go to a College to get a Trade, man that is really fancy, make lots of Money on the Trades People , you have gone Nuts!

“improved class scheduling”

Good Lord! are they still working on that?

“But” you have to pay trades instructors that much or you won’t have any trades instructors.

Agreed on the 6 figured salaries but instructors don’t make that kind of cash. Some management types do though!

Outwest I’m not sure what you are trying to say. Where else would you go to trades school?

in this part of the world, maybe a trades school should be seperate from a college something like northern bcit…

What does BCIT stand for?
Trades training has always been a part of community colleges. We already have northern bcit. It’s called CNC. I guess we could call it CIIT. Central Interior Institute of Technology.

In the end the money comes from the same pot. The name of the school is insignificant. Heck even Sprott Shaw has trades training.

The main problem at the College is bureaucracy. Just like the university, city hall, the regional district, ++++++++
The top dogs are compensated far more richly than the cats who actually keep the outfits running smoothly. Way out of proportion, in my opinion.
