Rec Centre Expansion Announced for Burns Lake
Burns Lake, B.C.- As part of the on going efforts to support the community of Burns Lake in the wake of the loss of the Babine Forest Products sawmill, the Province is providing $2.4 million dollars to expand the recreation centre in Burns Lake.
Nechako Lakes MLA John Rustad says Burns Lake has been working towards this project for 15 years, “This is a project the community has been trying to work towards . They had made applications through a number of other programs, they were unsuccessful in those applications in previous years, but the Premier has stepped up to the plate and wanted to do something for the community so we worked with the Finance Minister who was able to come forward with funding. I am very pleased we are able to deliver on this for the community.”
The project , called the “Lakes District Multi-Sport Facility Expansion and Healthy Living Project” will see the construction of a 10,000 square foot building that will join the existing curling rink and arena, and contain a squash court, climbing wall, children’s indoor-play area, workout gym, physical-therapy area and multi-use area.
Construction is expected to start later this year, with a completion date of March 2015.
As is the case with the recent Highway upgrade projects announced for that region, there is an expectation local people will be hired “This project would be no different in trying to maximize the amount of local individuals as part of the construction” says Rustad.
Burns Lake Mayor Luke Strimbold says the expansion will be a great addition to the community “ This expansion and healthy living project will create opportunities for training and coaching, accommodate health-care sessions and services, provide community meeting space, development of new recreation programs and improving current programs, as well as provide a venue for all community groups to utilize."
The full cost of the project is $3 million with the balance of the funds coming from the Village of Burns Lake ($392,000) Regional District of Bulkley-Nechako ($113,000), Nechako-Kitamaat Development Fund Society ($40,000), Northern Development ($60,000), and further fundraising.

The Liberal Goverment were not losing in the polls and just around the corner to an election. Cristy will have her MLA shovelling money of the back of the Goverments money truck in a Town near you in the very near future!
why cant they open mills in pg for the workers they could work at what there good at
Hopefully the next government will correct the wrong done to Prince George by getting some of the mills going again.
Unless the lumber market turns around, there will be no more mills starting in the Prince George area.
This is just another Political Announcement, because of the pending election. (July 2012)
Don’t worry, even if the lumber market in the US turns around the NDP government will continue to close mills and curtail mining. They have their magic money tree to fund all of their social programs remember? I think its called “federal transfers to a have-not province”
“Construction is expected to start later this year, with a completion date of March 2015.”
So let’s say construction starts September 2012 … anything later than that is going to end up costing more due to winter construction.
Even if the construction starts in March of 2013, that would make a 2 year construction period for a 10,000 ft2 building?
They must be using the crew from the Sandman consruction.
