It only took 19 years but the job is finally done. Putting in legislation is easy, getting it out is difficult.

So what licensing fee is replacing it? They bringing back the yearly carrying permit with a nice new big fat fee? I don’t imagine the POL/PAL will last forever. Or I’m just confused and the PAL isn’t going away?

I guess I should read the article. So PAL isn’t going away. Just wondering if they are going to make a yearly license fee like before.

This appears to be a real simple thing.
You have to continue to renew your PAL/POL, you just no longer have to REGISTER your LONG guns. Where’s Gunner when you need him?

Never had to pay for renewals but I imagine that will change.

I’ve owned firearms for 40 years and don’t recall any yearly licence fee in BC. What licence are you referring to?

In order to aquire a PAL you must pass the Canadian Firearms Safety Course and undergo the necessary screening process.

Why would not having to pay for renewals change?

If I remember correctly you had to pay afee every 5 years,The only reson why I got rid of my rifle as I no longer used it.

-If you already have your PAL and you renew it before the expiry date.. You dont pay.
They give you a bit of a grace period after it expires. If you let it lapse past the expiry and grace period you need to re aply and pay over again.. I learned the hard way.

It was called a hunting license which was good for a year. It was also your gun carrying license. So if I decided not to go hunting one year and didn’t buy a hunting license then technically I wouldn’t legally be able to go to the gun range/gravel pit. Not many noticed it was both and didn’t worry about it because you got a new one each year.

Not true. You used to be able to purchase a 5 year firearms license that allowed you to carry a gun regardless of whether you were hunting or not. I believe this was a federal license and I actually seem to recall it was cheaper than a hunting license. Of course, you still needed the BC hunting license (along with your hunter ID number) if you wanted ti hunt.

There were may non-hunters out there that just bought the 5 year license for target shooting or so they could legally have the shotgun with them when they were camping, etc.

Could be but the hunting license covered it on a yearly bases if you wanted to take a shotgun camping (LOL). I believe it expired in April though and most wouldn’t renew until the fall.

The way it works today is, a hunting licence is just that, A hunting licence. It doesn’t allow you to possess firearms.

If you want to possess or aquire firearms you need to have a POL or a PAL.
New applicants are only able to aquire a PAL.

NMG, NoWays comment is correct. A hunting licence did in fact permit you to carry a firearm at one time not so long ago.

Yeah now everyone can start digging up all the guns buried away for safe keeping along with off to the gun shop to buy a few new ones.

Yeah I realize that. I was referring to his comment where he said that you couldn’t head to the range if you didn’t have a hunting license. That part was wrong and that’s where the other type of license came in.

Doesn’t much matter now though, LOL.

I remember to walk into Army&Navy in Vancouver and you could buy a 303 for 25 Dollars and if if you wanted to buy a armload of them it was fine too, how many Boxes of Ammo you want, hand over your Money and that was it, did we have any less Criminals then ? no the same as today, what we have today is a Bunch of Idiots running the Government dreaming up new ways to get Money from you !

I remember when parents would drive around town with 4 or 5 kids riding in the box of the pickup truck as well. Heck, dad may have even been on his second or third beer while driving and mom may have been smoking up a storm with the newborn sitting in her lap (who needs car seats).

At one time you needed to obtain a firearms license in order for you to carry a rifle.

This was obtained by walking into a hardware store and asking for one. The cost was a dollar. You could hunt rabbits and grouse with this license, however if you wanted to hunt bigger game you had to get a hunting license.

Life was simpler then.
