Prince George, B.C. –The latest housing starts numbers from Canada Mortgage and Housing show increased activity in Prince George in March compared to the same month a year ago.
Last month, there were 8 new single detached homes started in Prince George, up from the 2 starts recorded in the same month in 2011.
The year to date numbers are also showing an increase when it comes to single detached starts, but the lack of starts for multiple family dwellings has made the overall year to date number slide.
Provincially, the monthly and year to date picture is brighter. CMHC reports 1,622 housing starts in provincial urban areas during March, up from 1,436 housing starts in March 2011. Both multiple-family and single-detached housing starts increased compared to March 2011 levels.
As for year to date details, "Residential construction in British Columbia is running about 14 per cent ahead of last year’s levels due to pick-ups in single-detached home starts and multiple-family construction," said Carol Frketich, CMHC’s BC Regional Economist. During the first three months of 2012, 1,307 single-detached and 4,546 multiple-family homes were started.

oh well …. maybe there will be an announcement soon to change all that.
PG has the oldest most run down rental units almost anywhere. I’m surprised we haven’t seen any investors in this area with the university and and rising retirement demographic… I think the city really drops the ball on promoting good rental units in this city. I think it really hurts the perception PG has to potential new residents.
For sure Eagle I wonder what happened to all of those displaced by the apartment building fire on 20th avenue?
