Beer at the Movies O.K’d

Wednesday, April 11, 2012 @ 1:13 PM

Prince George, B.C. – You may soon be able to have a beer with that order of popcorn at the movie theatre.

The Provincial Government is making it possible for movie theatres to apply to serve booze during a movie.

The changes announced today clear the way for movie theatres, like the one in Prince George, to get a liquor licence and serve alcohol in “adult-only” auditoriums and adjacent lobbies. By limiting the liquor service to adult only auditoriums, there is less likelihood of minors sneaking a sip once the lights go down and all eyes are on the screen.

Theatres with a single screen, and live-event theatres can apply to serve alcohol in a lobby where minors are present and to serve liquor in the auditorium for adult-only screenings or events.

Local governments will continue to have input on all new liquor primary licence applications.

There is no indication at this point that the local Famous Players 6 theatre would be applying for a liquor licence.

B.C. joins the provinces of Ontario, Manitoba and Alberta in this move to allow alcohol in movie theatres.

Another reason to avoid going to the theatre. Like I need some drunk yahoo annoying me while I’m watching a movie. It’s bad enough with the sober ones kicking the back of your chair or talking on their cell phone or talking through the whole movie to their friend beside them.

Now they’ll be more loud, more ignorant, and more slurred.

I’ll stick to my home theater, where the only drunk in the room is me.

A sporting event would be great… but I wouldn’t go to a theater serving booze with all the disruptions to the movie it would cause. Dumb idea IMO.

Considering the markup at the concessions, I would peg the cost of a beer at the movies to be somewhere in the neighborhood of $30. And people will probably still line up to pay it.

Gotta love the BC Liberals plan to pay for all of their fiscal blunders and lies over the past decade. Booze and gambling!!! I’m really surprised they haven’t legalized prostitution and weed as well…may as well grab another few billion for their bridges, BC place roofs and golden handshakes!

Unreal. And to think we chased Glen Clark away for a free knife and a deck, and fast ferries that amounted to a drop in the bucket of Scampbell/Crusty waste.

Gotta love the same old anti-government rants. Last I checked, consumption of booze and gambling were voluntary activities.

Don’t worry, the legislation also says it is at the discretion of city hall so our no-fun crew will never allow it in PG anyway.

Booze and gambline were EVIL! according to the Liberals when the NDP were in charge of them, JohnnyBelt. Now they are just a wonderful source of revenue…to be tapped wherever and whenever the mood hits. I call that hypocrisy.

If that’s an anti-government rant, so be it. This government hasn’t done anything to NOT rant about in years. The only thing its dying numbers of supporters have to hang their hats on is the *yawn* constant fear-mongering about the inevitable NDP majority and the sky-is-falling predictions about the dire economy that will follow. You really think all the smart business people haven’t left Dodge already, seeing the writing on the wall as soon as Gordo headed for the lifeboats?

interceptor, I feel bad for you that your idea of fun is drinking in public.

Don’t feel bad for me Ruez, I do ok. Feel bad for the people with no self control or responsibilty that need the government to tell them where or when they can have a beer…

What is a “Scampbell/Crusty”?

I believe it is the varnacular name for a scum bag Liberral party.

After the habitual lying BC Liberals introduced tougher drinking driving laws, can you say hypocrisy.

Wait until someone dies on the road after leaving the theatre inebriated, you inform the family Johnnybelt!

This is good news. If someone wants a beer, let them have a friggin’ beer. Those opposed can stay out of the adults only theatre and watch movies with the screaming little kids.

What is a “Scampbell/Crusty”? fiberals

The local Temperance League can rest easy.

The local theatre has stated they will not be looking to serve beer for now at least (as per The Citizen).

I do have Beer at the Movies but at Home, tell me how do you get home, by Bus ,Taxi or you just drive ?
Collect more Taxes any old way you can, what a Government we have. Cheers

I can’t even begin to imagine how bad the beer would be if it’s draught. Better come out of a can.

I don’t think I’d drink alcohol at a movie, but I do like the idea of an adults only theatre. Most of the obnoxious behaviour I’ve witnessed (much like what cmdrjoe described above) comes from those under the age of 19.

I wish to add my voice to those who take umbrage with the fast and loose use of the term “Crusty”. I don’t give rat’s ass if the spelling is different, I find it offensive and insist that it stop this instant!
But I could be wrong . . . .

I think most people can manage a two hour movie without alcohol….plus, there is something icky about sitting in the dark, no conversation allowed, swilling a couple back.

As has been pointed out, add a 15 to 25 buck taxi fair on top of the admittance, treats, beer…holy hell, a night out to a pub with good company, or better yet, on my own deck and BBQ is a much better idea.

Anyone else find it alarming that our fabulous casino actually picks gamblers up at the BUS STOP? What a service! On top of the gaming cuts to charities and non profits and our own Treasure Cove seemingly supporting nothing but policitical campaigns….won’t spend a red cent there either. Well, nickel, dime, etc in the near future, lol.

So bcnorth is against it. That’s fine, but who are you to say others can’t? I don’t go to the casino but I certainly don’t care if someone else wants to. I used to have neighbors that would get drunk and stay up half the night “on their deck with good company” – maybe the government needs to step in?

Hehe and then drive home after the movie. LOL.

The City will allow it as long as they get a cut from the sales.

“Most of the obnoxious behaviour I’ve witnessed (much like what cmdrjoe described above) comes from those under the age of 19.”

You haven’t been to a Cougars game.

If the government really wanted to rake in the tax on booze all they have to do is let the grocery stores sell it. Close down all the high paid government liquor stores and let the minimum wage checkout people ring it up.

Heck let’s start selling it at Mickey D’s too. “Want an extra large for a extra 1.00?” It will bring a new meaning to the name Happy Meal!

Nope, Interceptor, not against it, the alcohol in the theatres, just sharing that personally I wouldn’t paricipate, for the reasons stated; however, go for it. Just might not fly, or take awhile to catch on due to the lack of social interaction atmosphere at a theatre. Regarding your drunken neighbours on their deck…ulp…where do you live, lol.

LMAO – I agree 100%, I will be very suprised if this actually takes off. Having said that, the wife rarely drinks so yes, I probably would have a beer instead of a coke if we were out for a movie.
I moved a few years back so the neighbors are no longer an issue… You didn’t drive a black chevy truck though did you? ;-)

Ps Bcnorth – sorry if I missread your remarks. I just get tired of the people that never go to a bar complaining about one opening… Or have never been to the casino and complain about them… Or havee never been to a hockey game and complain about the ice… Or have never been to the library and complain about an expansion… You get my drift. I’ve even started biting my tongue on a PAC – just because I wouldn’t use it I can’t just kneejerk fight it until some facts come out ;-)

Hell of a good idea, we need more bloody drunks on the road!

Why does everyone assume that if you allow beer in the movies everyone will get just plastered ? Do they all have problems stopping at one ???

As for me I will not drink at the theater but if someone else wants to pay $20 (just a guess) for a beer go ahead.. We already pay rediculous prices just for popcorn.

Personally, I don’t see how anyone can stand going to a walkin theatre anymore, regardless of what they serve there. The “theatre experience” wore off a long time ago with the invention of HDTV and 3DTV and the mini sound systems that you can get for your 60″ plasma. Who needs the screaming kids, sticky floors and ridiculously overprices junk food at the theatre?

Here here, I agree with you. Sticky seats, pathetic cleanliness and over priced treats. What a joke. And no competition. Got to just live with it or avoid it. I don’t think beer will make a hill of a difference to anyone.
