More Upgrades on Cariboo Connector, But No Good News for 16 West

Friday, April 13, 2012 @ 3:32 PM

Premier Christy Clark, Minister of Jobs, Trade and Innovation Pat Bell,  Transportation Minister Blair Lekstrom and  Minister of Justice, Attorney General Shirley Bond among those to celebrate the news of the Cariboo Connector Phase 2

Prince George, B.C.- Premier Christy Clark has announced the Province will be spending $200 million on phase 2 of the Cariboo Connector project over the next 5 years.

This phase covers 9 projects starting with the four laning of the stretch of Highway 97 between the Old Cariboo Highway and Sintich Road, and four laning of a piece near 70 Mile House.

The 9 projects, when complete, will improve a total of 30 kilometers of Highway 97 between Prince George and Cache Creek.

"Expanding our transportation network is key to sustaining economic growth and protecting and creating jobs across our province," said Premier Clark.

But if the transportation network is the key to economic growth, there is no good news on the much needed upgrades on Highway 16.

“We recognize the challenges with the highway 16 corridor” says Transportation Minister Blair Lekstrom, “We’re looking at a number of opportunities. It will be a long range project as well, as much as most of us would like to achieve something like the Cariboo Connector in a year or two. It’s ( upgrade of highway 16) a multi year issue , our staff are actually well aware of that. When you look at the opportunities that the Port ( Prince Rupert) brings us, when you look at what takes place in our Province and our economy and our developing opportunities certainly  with the Asia-Pacific, so it is within our  work right now, we’re looking at it. I don’t have an announcement today, I can’t give you that, but we recognize and we know, that work has to go into that as part of our on going effort to make sure the free flow of goods and services and people can continue throughout the province.”

The other seven projects in the phase 2 of the Cariboo Connector project are:

* Stone Creek to Williams Road: four-laning between the Stone Creek Bridge and Williams Road including replacement or realignment at the CN Rail Overhead, south of Prince George.

* Quartz Road to Dragon Lake: four-laning between Quartz Road and Dragon Lake, south of Quesnel.

* Carson to Fox Mountain Road: four-laning between Carson Drive and Fox Mountain Road in Williams Lake including access management and intersection improvements.

* Williams Lake I.R. to Lexington: four-laning between the South Boundary of the Williams Lake Indian Reserve and Lexington Road.

* Stormy Road: four-laning, tying together the previously-constructed Stormy Road North and Bullock Lake Road projects, south of 100 Mile House.

* 76 Mile South: four-laning, tying together the Stormy and 70 Mile North sections, south of 100 Mile House

* Bonaparte Intersection: intersection improvements at Bonaparte intersection, north of Cache Creek.

I know the usual anti-government crew will be along soon to poo-poo and throw out their usual ‘clever’ ways to make fun of the Premier’s name, but this is good news.

Four-laning from Cache Creek to PG is no small task, and certainly not cheap.

Considering the world is moving between PG and Rupert, it’s time to start working on that road, especially between PG and Vanderhoof (where there are far too many fatalities).

Can be accelerated a bit. 30 km in 5 years? More like 2 years. Will be 50 years before its all 4 laned.

I seem to recall that it is indeed a 50 year project. 40 million a year is progress at a snails pace.

The completion will take decades!

The new Port Mann Bridge costs somewhere between 2.8 and 3.2 billion – that’s billion with a B.

Still, better than nothing.

Couldn’t a toll road approach speed construction up a bit? I would gladly pay 30 or 35 bucks from here to Crash Creek to have a real 21st century divided safe highway!

Sorry for the repeat. Refreshed damm page.

Put a toll on the Sea to Sky…that would help speed things up a bit. Oh, how long did it take to fix that one up?

The highway from PG to vanderhoof has had more upgrades in the past decade or so than anywhere else I can think of. Is it just me or has that only resulted in people driving faster and stupider?

Yes People do drive faster and stupider , at a 100km it’s like you stand still, sorry I don’t make the Limits , I just abide , don’t have the Money for fines!

With any luck the Lieberals won’t be around after next spring to spout off on cariboo connector improvements. Just another photo op for a premier with a lower than low approval rating.

Throw in the Bypass around Quesnel It’s been on the books for years. Front Street, call that a highway? And no I don’t like to slow down to look at the flowers along the road! I’ve seen them a million times before. Bypass Quesnel and Williams Lake.

Remember? They built the Alaska Highwaay in two years (may be wrong) But still it was big job done in a short time.

Look at the little section south of Williams Lake (150 Mile) That’s been going on for about four years. What is it a 5km stretch? I think they leave it like that for a tax collector “construction zone” twice the price for speeding in area where nothing happens.

Holy cow I think my pressures up!

Beat me to it on the 150 mile site. What a horribly slow build.

And where was the funding 1, 2, 3 years ago?

Desperate BC Liberals are trying to buy votes in the year before an election.

How many times have we seen this sad story before???

‘With any luck the Lieberals won’t be around after next spring…’

That’s hilarious – ‘Lieberals’.

Get it? Their real name is ‘Liberal’, but because they’ve lied in the past, Resident called them ‘Lieberals’.

That’s absolutely golden.

the Quesnel Bypass will flourish so tis said but by then I imagine we’ll all be dead

Three years of horrible cutbacks and now time to buy votes.

This was already announced by Gordo old news all ready in the long term plan

I’ve always called them fiberals. Nice four lane until one hits the railway underpasses, what a joke.

Toll road, can only have a toll road or bridge if there is a reasonable alternative non toll. PG I thought you deplored taxes.

Alaska hwy was not much of a highway when first built and it was an all out war effort.

13 posts before someone mentioned the old tried and true ‘vote buying’. I would’ve guessed less. C’mon guys, you can do better than that!

I would just like to see the government widen the road by three feet. Why not it would be far more easy than building more passing lanes, many many lives in the north would be saved, and the whole highway could be done in a year or two.

Build the ditch back a foot or two on either side of the existing road and then change the way the yellow line is done on the single lane highways in the north.

Rather than a double line 4″inches apart why not widen them to three feet… in the winter leave a little more snow and sand in the center to deter passing and give traction when it is needed outside of the road groove.

The biggest problem we have on the highway today is to many people traveling too close to the center line and in bad weather there is no room for error.

Thats right Eagle and the truckers love that center line.

Realistically there is not a lot of traffic between Cache Creek, and Prince George. Much less now than in the 70’s and 80’s. Every small town from Cache Creek to Prince Rupert has had a decrease in population. In addition trucking of lumber to Vancouver has been decreased.

So do we really need to spend all this money???? The traffic on Highway 16 West on the other hand is really busy, and that Highway needs some serious work.

The road widening programs on 97South are stragically located to get the maximum benefits from a political point of view. Highway 16 on the other hand after you get by Nechako Lake Riding, is NDP country, and that could explain why not much money is being spent.

Maybe the Government thinks that Rustads seat is safe, and seats to the South are vulnerable.

Look for an election this year.

Have a nice day.

Funny but the wider and straighter they build roads, the more and far more devastaing, accidents there are. Where roads are narrower and poorly ‘centre-lined’, people drive more carefully and slower.
When they limited trucks to 70 KpH in Holland, they found a huge increase in fuel savings and actually shorter delivery times.
Driving a bit slower steady speed actually reduces the ‘waves’ in traffic patterns.
