Logo and Branding Launched for Winter Games
Saturday, April 14, 2012 @ 3:12 PM
The Canada Winter Games logo on the left, the Prince George Logo is on the right. According to Games policy, the host city logo cannot be displayed on its own.
Prince George, B.C.- “Choose your path, leave your tracks, journey with us” You will hear or see, all, or portions of that statement a lot over the next couple of years as it is the key marketing phrase for the Prince George Canada Winter Games.
This afternoon, the 2015 Games Society launched the logo, and the drive for volunteers at an event at the Pine Centre Mall.
With politicians, athletes, Game Society members, stakeholders and members of the public present, they launched the logo which, while reminiscent of a snowflake, has specific meaning.
The double V at the top represents the two rivers which flow through Prince George, as well as represent the lanyard on which a medal will hang. There are six “stylized” cheering people forming the “hub” which represents Prince George.
The visual identity of the Games will appear on merchandise to athlete pinneys. There are three separate scenes;
Winter, Nature and Canada.
Each landscape scene is made up of paths, triangles, textures animal creatures athletes and some will include local landmarks.

Too bad they hadn’t included a logo representing a lot of dollars coming out of local taxpayers’ pockets. I think that is more realistic.
It looks like a soccer ball to me.
Value Village will be proud to have the two V’s on the logo.
Wow. What a piece of crap.
I think the dignitaries should sent that one back for the designer to rework…
I thought the logo was supposed to show “pride.” Then why is “Prince George” so small? Look at Halifax – big and proud: http://www.novascotia.com/en/home/thingstoseeanddo/canadagames.aspx
PG’s feels off balance, like it’s dodging a pothole.
wow, can everybody lighten up please?

The Halifax one as a larger imnage….. It was the best of the new logos which have to use the Canada games logo.
“The double V at the top represents the two rivers which flow through Prince George”
Could have fooled me. And here I thought it was a “W” for winter. As they say in french “double V”.
This was a very simple, but original one prior to Canada Games imposing their logo on the desing.

Proving one more that bureaucracy and imagination do not live well together.
Furlong can maybe use this as an example of not such a “meaningful vision” in his speech tonight.
I just got rid of a big weight off my shoulders mountainman. Feel considerably lighter now, thanks. ;-)
It is what it is. Some people like it, others don’t. It happens. Not everyone likes Picasso.
Have I said yet that the logo is very “busy”?
I’m going to take mountainmans advice and light one up right now. Maybe then that logo will look a little better.
Where’s the potholes? ;)
So… The same people complaining about the games are now complaining about the logo…I guess it is easier to sit and beotch than to get involved with anything huh? Enjoy American Idol or Survivor or whatever it is that keeps you awake until bedtime.
Well said interceptor!!
What is an American Idol or a Survivor ??
Awesome! Wish I could have been there to see it.
These games are going to be great!
You know, I have thought about it some more.
I have reached the conclusion that everything about this logo says “Prince George”.
Well designed. :-)
Nice gus :)
Interceptor – some of the complainers are VERY involved in the community, including major sporting and cultural evens, and in fact have been recognized for their excellence in promotion.
I suggest perhaps these so-called complainers have good taste, design sensibility and promotional saavy, and expect much better from such a well-funded group of highly paid fat cats as compared to what many volunteers working from the side of their desk accplish.
It’s a crappy logo, period.
Fair enough bohemian – please share the link to your awesome logo so we can talk to the organizers about why it wasn’t used
Actually, from the previous story before the logo was released bohemian says quote “And who the f**k cares about the logo anyway?”
So… Appparently you do?
Send me the design fee and I’ll get to work.
How cliche – people griping because they don’t like a logo – the overpaid people are all stupid and bad – if it’s not fixing potholes it must be a waste of money – if it doesn’t personally benefit me I’m against it. Blah blah blah. Yawn.
Hey Buzz, you missed the wink & smiley face at the end of my post. The logo is suppose to represent all that is truly PG,
soooo…Nothing says PG more than a car swallowing hole in the road. I echo
mountainman, lighten up.
Cliché????? I am sorry, Do not know what you are referring to buzz. I see no cliché.
âpeople griping because they don’t like a logoâ
There was a lot of hoopla leading up to this unveiling. Some people actually were waiting for something wonderful. If you went back to some of my posts about it I wrote that there will not be much for the artist to work with since they have to meet the bureaucratic requirements of the Canada Games organization which is quite probably that the games logo cannot be overpowered. Halifax, in my opinion, has been the best example of a focused and uncluttered logo which has managed to include an additional element of coloured rays leading the eye to the two key elements of event and host city.

There is nothing unusual about people expressing opinions about a new uniform for their local hockey team or car aficionados expressing their opinions about the shell design of a new 2014 GM or Toyota or BMW. Not everyone will be of like mind and some will express their opinions more than others. Some will also come from a point of view expressed by a sound knowledge base of the specialized design industry involved in each case. It is also why we have galleries, to showcase the visual arts and hopefully begin a discourse of how people relate to the art. Everyone is unique.
Now, there is something added in the case of this particular logo. It represents, as we have been led to believe, OUR hosting of the Canadian event. It is supposed to make us proud to show off this city.
In my view, it might make some people proud, but it does not make me proud to have such a boat anchor of a logo be displayed throughout the country for the next three years.
Thank you for allowing me to express my probably not so politically correct opinion.

Good lecture Gus. Thanks – I wasn’t aware of any of that.
