It’s Earth Day!

Spencer Pearen, his mom, Lisa, and little sister, Elizabeth, clean up along Giscome Road

Prince George, BC –  When five-year-old Spencer Pearen’s kindergarten teacher told him about Earth Day, he listened…

And then, he acted.  Yesterday, the Blackburn Elementary School student asked his mom, Lisa, if they could clean up the garbage littering the roadside across from their home.

Lisa Pearen knew Earth Day was approaching, but she hadn’t realized that’s what prompted Spencer’s desire to get outside and ‘pitch in’ along Giscome Road, until 250News stopped by to chat with the family while they worked.

According to REAPS, the local non-profit society working towards waste avoidance, more than one billion people around the globe will participate in Earth Day activities today.  On April 22nd, 1970, 20-million Americans took part in rallies across the country to demand a healthy, sustainable environment – it’s the day many feel marked the start of the modern environmental movement.

When asked what he was doing, Spencer said, "I’m just cleaning up garbage."  To which his two-year-old sister, Elizabeth, chimed in, "Me, too! Me, too!"

It seemed apparent that Spencer was doing so much more.

Wow! What a Great Team! Happy Earth Day!

“Yesterday, the Blackburn Elementary School student asked his mom, Lisa, if they could clean up the garbage littering the roadside across from their home.”

Way to go mom! I know alot of parents who would have found a way to get out of it…

This is a wonderful, uplifting article! It shows how even kindergarten children will respond to their teacher’s suggestions. And the time to learn about the environment is when kids are small. They are very impressionable and this young boy will, without doubt, remember this earth-loving experience, with the cooperation of his Mom and little Sis, for the rest of his life.
It’s also an amazing example of what a caring teacher can do to impress her/her students,no matter what age!

Didn’t catch this Earth Day announcement in either local paper, or did I miss something?

Hats off to our wonderful teachers!

Earth day is everyday!
