Northern BC Gets Six New Webcams

Sunday, April 29, 2012 @ 6:47 AM
TERRACE– The Province is adding 30 web cameras to its DriveBC network this year, giving motorists more opportunities to check real-time traffic, road and weather conditions as they plan their trips.
Six of these will be in Northern B.C.
In the Northwest, webcams are coming to Highway 16 between Kitwanga and Terrace and between Terrace and Smithers, and to Highway 37 between Kitwanga and Dease Lake. The Province is also adding webcams in the New Aiyansh and ranisle areas.
These 30 new webcams, along with the addition of a number of construction cameras from around the province, will bring the number of webcam images available on DriveBC to over 250, with 38 of these in Northern B.C. Installations are scheduled to begin this spring, and it is anticipated all will be in operation before winter.
Priority for new web cameras is given to routes prone to extreme weather or traffic congestion, and for sites where there isn’t already a nearby webcam.

Need some pothole cameras around PG.

seamut@Don’t you get it? The potholes are a safety feature. They’re free, natural speed bumps!

It appears to be inevitable that all drivers will be expected to carry a cell phone smart enough to access the w.w.web so that they can “check drivebc.ca”
Can the techies explain how one accesses the ‘web from the vast areas around B.C. that have no cell signal?

Can anyone explain the usefulness of three road signs costing one million dollars that
advise the driver to ‘check drivebc.ca’
???
metalman.

Wait till you hit the next town which may have cellular connection depending on the service you have. :-)

Not pot holes. Mini-sink holes.

What I get a chuckle out of is some bottom feeder in city hall uses tax payer money to buy a trendy electric toy to play with in the guise of reducing some sort of emissions. Now how much emissions are added with slowing down seeding up of thousands of cars to dodging potholes.

274.4 tonnes

per pothole … if located within projected track of wheels ;-)

on average …

The manufacturer could not keep up with the Prince George demand for pot hole cameras.
Even world wide iphone sales would be dwarfed by sales of pot hole cameras in PG.

What a joke the city website is for reporting a pot hole. The site gives the option of giving an address, or intersection. A far superior and easier approach would have been just to ask for the name of the street.

The budget must be bad this year. No patching of pot holes, and residential streets have yet to see a sweeper.

Sure am glad we continue to buy property downtown, give businesses downtown a tax break, have a new natural gas fired community energy system, city purchasing building, dike plans, use of the AAP, all at the expense of having decent roads.

Mayor and council forget the photo op projects and get on with what the taxpayer needs for his daily commute. No wonder outsiders won’t move to PG and others call it the arm pit of BC.

Pacific Road in the BCR Site should have its own camera, flashing lights, and median protection for the massive sink holes they have in the middle of the road there. What a disgrace it could be allowed to fester so long to this point.

Speaking to cell service. It would be nice if Telus and Bell push to have the whole province at least 3G. This is a high tech world and all.

“It would be nice if Telus and Bell push to have the whole province at least 3G. This is a high tech world and all. “

I’m sure Bell and Telus would love it as well. How much more are you willing to pay for the convenience?

These webcams are fine…I use them occasionally…but I also suspect some mucky-muck highway contractor does to.
So do they punch up the webcam, have look, and say..no…we don’t need to send the trucks out there today?
Judging by the conditions of our roads out west and even south last winter,it is entirely possible.

They are probably handy for police to use when investigating crimes too! Imagine how easy it would be to track vehicles…..
