Christy Clark Pledges Support
Prince George- Premier Christy Clark has pledged the province’s support to the families of those people who suffered from the devastating explosion and fire at Lakeland Mills Monday.
Clark visited with the families this afternoon before meeting with the Prince George fire fighters who battled the blaze, along with members of the RCMP and other support groups.
Her visit follows on the heels of a meeting today with Labour Minister Margaret MacDiarmid and members of COFI who are seeking an answer as to what has caused the explosions and ensuing fires in both Burns Lake and Prince George.
Former Forest Minister Pat Bell says they went away today and are going to go through their operations to try and come up with a reason for the fires and explosions.
Bell says the conditions were different in Burns Lake in that the temperature that day was below minus -30, and heaters were on. While in Prince George the other night it was seven above and the humidity was around 100%.
He also talked about the saws used in the cutting of the beetle wood. "They don’t cut with the same amount of chips as they did in the old days," says Bell. "The new saws have more dust, but is that the cause? we simply don’t know."

Clark talks with local fire fighters.
The Premier says WorkSafe BC is starting with inspections in the areas were beetle wood is being milled and then will move out from there.
"We will not be jumping to any conclusions until we know what caused this disaster."

Words are nice. Remember those families that lost their jobs when the Canfor plywood mill burned down in Prince George a few years back? A lot of those workers still haven’t got their EI cheques.

What about those families?
From CBC, WorkSafeBC has released five years of inspection records for the Lakelands Mills sawmill in Prince George, B.C., the site of Monday’s fatal explosion, which indicate dust levels have been a concern at the mill in the past.
The 120 pages of documents show inspectors found piles of wood dust throughout the mill as recently as February.
The records note that the mill operator was told to prevent the accumulation of “hazardous amounts of wood dust.”
Just shows the useless organization worksafe is. Mill should have been forced down to clean, some sort of penalty. Production, go go go screw safety. Talking union heads what have they ever down for their inflated pay. Owners look in the mirror and see what you have done. A totally preventable disaster.
Thats why its called WorkSafe. If you dont and get hurt they screw you.
How many of our tax dollars did she spend to come up here and beg for votes in the next election??…because going around town shaking hands, as she is doing, only screams “vote for me”….I think she’s thinking of herself more than any of the workers and their families of this tragedy…

It is called tombstone engineering. Despite dangerous conditions, no one followed up on the warnings as the budget cuts have decimated worksafe’s ability to police the mills. This blood is on all those politicians who have blindly support all the budget cuts that have left yet another needed safety net to fail and cost lives in place of spent dollars. Nice try Christy but, as per usual, if you really care about the citizens of British Columbia you would reverse the corporate tax cuts and put real people to work ensuring that our laws and regulations are enforce. Wouldn’t these politicians prefer to be seen spending money and protecting human lives instead of flying around and posing for photo opts about how sorry you are that this has happened. No food inpectors=deadly foods (ground hamburger posionings, forest management that has let the woods and our parks drop into safety wastelands, etc. Now we can add exploding mills due to no follow up on inspection warnings. More lives taken but look we have cut enough to give corporations yet another tax/welfare gift.
Had enough of neo-liberalism yet? Wait until it happens to your family, but then again you might get lucky and not have to deal with a death, but find out that your recently disabled relative can not get any real financial help because it too has been cut in the falsely touted neo-liberal mantraof smaller government and corporate self regulation. It makes me sick to have seen all that has been lost to the citizens of B.C. and Canada itself. Remember when Harper said “give me a majority governmnet and you will not even be able to reckognize Canada anymore”? This type of lack of government involvement is exactly what comes of the neo-liberal ideology.
My condolances to anyone who has had a personal loss in these incidents. Hopefully, the losses will not been in vain as the people will wake up and see how our province and our country have been stolen by corporate driven politicians.

Very tacky doubletrouble. If the premier didn’t come up to PG everyone would say she didn’t care about the north. She is doing what she should be doing! Showing support for families and thanking the front line people!
hmm Christy Clark here shaking hands, would it be better if she had not come? Then she would have been critized for not coming. So whether she comes or not she is critized. I think it is better that she comes to see first hand.
