Have We Thought About Having Quesnel Give Us Some Ideas For Road Spending

Monday, April 30, 2012 @ 3:40 AM
There are a couple of things to consider when you drive the roads in the city of Prince George.
One; this city is seven times larger than Quesnel, and two; Quesnel has addressed its road problem long before Prince George.
The city of Quesnel is spending one and a half million dollars on road rehabilitation this year, Prince George is spending three and half million.
Quesnel has slightly more than 10,000 people, Prince George has about 73,000.
That means Prince George is seven times larger than Quesnel and based on that community’s spending in order to keep its roads in order,  we would need to put 10 million into P.G.  roads this year.
Well we are not and suggesting that it is an unusually bad winter will not cut it. That in large measure is why the AAP process got such major support.
Perhaps we need to send some of our councillors and management to Quesnel to look at how they spend their money.
We may be seven times larger, but it doesn’t seem we are 7 times  wiser when it comes to keeping our roads  in  good condition.
I’m Meisner and that’s one man’s opinion.

Is there anything we can actually do other than bitch and whine? It is absolutely pathetic how bad shape our roads have become and all we hear are excuses coming out of city hall. I would sign any petition if it were able to make city hall fix this problem. How the heck can quesnel spend 1.5m and us only 3.5m and they have 1/7th the popuation. Someone is spending all our $ in the wrong places obviously.

“Someone is spending all our $ in the wrong places obviously.”

Agreed! In countries where taxes are low or basically non-existent people have low expectation of government services or none at all.

Here we are paying big taxes, year after year! Our expectations are not unreasonable, yet they are being met less and less!

Something has gone out completely off the rails – wrong priorities, games before basic infrastructure…councillor rubbing it in that the megabucks PAC is still coming and supported by the mayor…haughty attitudes…we know everything better…if you don’t like the potholes find an alternate route and NO! we will not ever look at a modern pothole patching machine.

That’s it!

quesnel has a gold mine.

While in Quesnel a couple weeks ago, I had noticed that their roads are not much better than ours. I still had to dodge potholes through the residential neighborhoods.
This is by no means a supportive statement about the conditions of our roads, just to say that they are not significantly better.
And yes, if there was a petition I could sign to have our City Council pay attention to our roads, I would for sure sign it! :)

“Perhaps we need to send some of our councillors and management to Quesnel to look at how they spend their money”

And perhaps PG should start charging people from Quesnel a “neighbour tax” when they come north to take advantage of the various services that are not available in Quesnel, all funded by PG taxpayers. The tax would be used to offset some of the additional cost of operating and supporting those said services.

Quesnel could do the same when PG people head down south, although I suspect the only thing that PG folks are missing that Quesnel has, is a lake in city limits that holds large trout, LOL :)

And a decent 18 hole golf course, NMG. ;)

I drove by a road crew that was patching a pothole. One guy was shovelling asphault into the hole and another guy was actually jumping up and down on it to pack it. Is that seriously the best we can do?

The System works this way, People from out of Town bring Money into the City to buy Goods, without the outlying People spending Money in your Town halve the Store will close, we don’t take advantage of your Town we are propping it up by spending our Dollars there.

“And a decent 18 hole golf course, NMG.” – are you serious? I guess you haven’t played aberdeen. Nothing in quesnel comes close to the challenge.

Because you can’t be talking about dragon lake golf course as a decent one, right? The other one isn’t exactly in town.

i think the main point of this article is the fact that quensel in its 1/7th the size of pg has a road budget nearly 1/2 our budget. yes their roads may not be in great condition but i cannot imagine how bad our roads are going to erode to if this current level of funding continues. Quesnel will have considerable better rosds than us in the not to distant future at this rate. its a disgrace, utter disgrace.

I’d be furious if I were a taxpaying citizen of PG. I was just there visiting and got to experience these potholes. I can’t believe a city of that size has let their roads get to that poor of a condition. Isn’t there somebody that’s supposed to look after these? If there is, fire that guy. If not, someone should step up.
