New Home Buyers and Seniors To Receive Grants

Victoria – First-time home buyers can receive a cheque for up to
$10,000 to help with the cost of buying a newly built home, and seniors
who need permanent home renovations, to help them stay in their homes
longer, will be assisted with the cost of those renovations through
legislation introduced today by Finance Minister Kevin Falcon.
Bill 45, the Income Tax Amendment Act, 2012, introduces legislation for
the B.C. First-Time New Home Buyers’ Bonus and the B.C. Seniors’ Home
Renovation Tax Credit announced in Budget 2012.
First-time buyers of newly built homes may be eligible to receive the
B.C. First-Time New Home Buyers’ Bonus of up to $10,000 – giving
families a break, while supporting the new-home construction sector.
Individuals must apply for the bonus through the B.C. government. Bonus
payments will be sent out as cheques in the mail.
A new B.C. Seniors’ Home Renovation Tax Credit of up to $1,000 annually
will be available to help with the cost of permanent home renovations
that provide British Columbians aged 65 and over with increased
independence, allowing them the flexibility to remain in their own
homes longer. It will be available to individuals who incur eligible
expenditures on or after April 1, 2012.
The credit can be claimed by seniors, whether they own their home or
rent, and by individuals who share a home with a senior, when
individuals file their personal income tax returns for 2012, and future
years.

At a time when the bubble is beginning to burst in real estate, the best Falcon can do is shovel more money out the door so “greater fools” can throw even more money away?

I hope all you partakers of this handout to homebuilders really thank your fellow taxpayers for this bonus the rest of us don’t get.
Buying more votes? Nah I didn’t think so.
This is why the HST is so long in coming to an end. Vote buying at it’s finest.
He’s like a broken record.
What about people who choose to buy older homes? I will be buyign in teh bowl because of transportation issues and it will be a smaller, older home…but sure could use the extra cash!
Exactly sarahsmith! I am in the Process of being a first time home buyer, and all there is for us is a $750 tax credit from the feds. Must be nice to get an incentive to buy a new home. Keeping the rich happy!
I can’t believe I missed this by 4 months. If they’re throwing away our tax dollars, I might as well get me some.
I sure hope there’s more to the story then is written here because this is just plain ridiculous.
I work pretty hard for my money; I don’t like the government just giving it away. It’s time for a change and no, the NDP or the Conservatives are not the answer either. What to do, what to do?
It’s just a rebate on the HST that people otherwise have to pay on new home purchases, faxman. It’s an inducement to help promote sales now instead of having people wait until the PST returns.
My understanding is the Seniors ‘money’ is for adapting a home for things like wheel chair access, and such things. Regular old folks won’t qualify.
Dont see why my tax dollars should go to pay for someone else to buy a house. Seems pretty stupid to me. But then look who is making the offer.
No one gave me a bloody thing when I bought my house. If the Governments would quit robbing people with all their tax and service charges, they would be able to buy their homes without this so called assistance.
In addition maybe the building contractors, and municipal Governments etc could make a little less on a home, which would also help people to purchase one.
Everyone is out to take Joe Citizen for every dollar he has. The Liberals dont have a clue how to run a Government. They are like babes in the woods. Totally lost.
I beleive that if the Liberals are kicked out in the next election, they will not be able to figure out why it happened. In all probability they will blame the voters for making the wrong choice.
I wouldn’t say IF the lieberals are kicked out but when they are kicked out. GOOGLE Alix G Tsakumis for the streight goods on Christy Clark, The HST, BC Rail and more. Opion 250 is also one of my favorites as they also give a balanced and honest view of the news.
“No one gave me a bloody thing when I bought my house.”
I’m trying to remember if one paid PST and GST on a used house purchase? I don’t think so. If memory serves me correct, one only paid 50% of the GST on a new house.
I’m not sure how HST applied to house purchases?
Where’s gus when you need him?
Where’s gus? (again) Probably on a bar stool at the end of the bar wearing a postie uniform. ;)
Great… I got a $12,000 penalty when I bought my home… now some select special interest gets $10,000 bonus for buying their home. Its utterly ridiculous.
I once bought a trailer after high school, then gave it to my brother after a few years to move back into town and go to school. 15 years later when I bought my house and I didn’t know if the trailer excluded me from the first time home owners grant. I asked the lawyer (well known in town) if my trailer made me ineligible for the grant. Lawyer had his assistant do the searches and came back that I wasn’t on record, and so should be eligible for a first time home owners grant.
The first day I moved in the first piece of mail I received was a $12,000 penalty fine for claiming the first time home owners grant when not eligible. I phoned the lawyer thinking this must be a mistake… he quickly covered his own butt with a disclaimer I signed as part of the paper work. Turns out his assistant searched the wrong government data base and it was news to them they had been using the wrong data base for their searches.
So I was upfront even giving the lawyer the address of the trailer for his searches… but the provincial government doesn’t see it that way when they have a debt to collect. Property transfer tax, plus two times the property transfer tax for penalty. When things are tight and one is not budgeted for such an unexpected financial hit it hurts.
So some rich kid from China can come here and get $10,000 rebate on their over priced condo in Vancouver, and I guess I’ll just have to pay for that as well now through more taxes and loopholes designed to make me pay. Brought to you by the BC liberals….
