Strong Winds Fanned Fire East of PG

Sunday, May 13, 2012 @ 5:48 AM
Prince George, B.C. &ndash Assistant Chief John Law with Prince George Fire Rescue says that grass fire on the Old Cariboo Highway Friday afternoon covered about 600 acres.

Eighteen firefighters from four halls responded to the blaze in the 4000 block Old Cariboo Highway at approximately 3pm Friday. The crews launched a rapid offensive attack but were unable to contain the fire due to strong winds.   From there they went into defensive mode to cover surrounding exposures. Eventually the winds died down and the fire was suppressed.

The cause of the grass fire hasn’t been explained so far. There were no injuries in fighting the blaze.

As a Blackburn resident (living a little too close to the fire), I am VERY grateful of how well fire crews contained the fire.
