"Marshall" sits still as Chris Purves prepares to take a photo
Prince George, B.C.- The BC-SPCA is trying something special at a handful of its shelters in the province.
Local photographers , like Chris Purves in Prince George, were busy today taking glamour shots of dogs in the care of the SPCA.
At the North Cariboo branch, Purves, a professional dog show photographer, worked with the animals to show their bright eyes, alert and happy features. The photos will be displayed on the SPCA’s website, with hopes people will see the dogs in a different light, see them as the loving pets they would like be..jpg)

“A dog has a totally different look when you take a photo outside of the kennel setting” says Purves. “Let’s show the dogs in a better light. Who wants to see a picture of a dog sitting beside a cage? That’s why I’m here, to do something for the dogs, to show their personality, and you can’t really show that when you take a photo of a dog in a cage.”
Up first this morning at the North Cariboo Branch of the BCSPCA, was Marshall, a Golden Retriever- Great Pyrenees cross. Marshall is a big dog, and a loveable one, as he stepped off the “set” and with tail a wagging (so fast the camera only caught a blur) approached Purves to give him a big doggy “kiss”. Then it was “Charlie’s” turn. This 5 and a half month old Chihuahua cross is a go getter. So much energy , you need to take a second look to realize that Charlie only has three legs. When he was brought to the shelter, his right front leg was lame, it had to be amputated, but that little dog has adapted and was hopping all over the set. He did manage to sit “still” for his glamour shot, (bottom right) but then he was off, hopping his way after a ball.
The special photography project is a pilot project, with hopes people will be encouraged to adopt . “This is Adoption Awareness Month in B.C.” says SPCA Regional Director Kathi Travers, she has two dogs, both adopted through the SPCA. “The photos will be on the BCSPCA website as early as later today, more likely tomorrow morning,
and I really hope people will take a moment to see these dogs, and make the decision to adopt.”

All BCSPCA animals have health checks, vaccinations, temperament testing and are spayed or neutered before becoming available for adoption.

Man, I’d take more but we’ve already got two rescued dogs.
My best dogs were rescues! Sure glad to have the SPCA.
The spca does wonderful things for these animals that cannot speak for themselves, and this is just another fine example. Thanks Chris Purves for this kind of help. Wish more people had your heart. Thumbs up PGSPCA.
P.s, I can only rescue cats as I am not allowed dogs where I live, but some of the shots of the dogs are just wonderful, shows them in a new light.
