Have Fun, And Use Your Smarts This Weekend

Friday, May 18, 2012 @ 9:44 AM
Prince George, B.C. – Have fun, but do it responsibly and with common sense. That’s the message from the B.C. Conservation Officer Services as we head into what many consider the first long weekend of summer.

Sgt. Rory Smith with C.O.S. says it’s a great time to get out and enjoy the outdoors, and if people do it safely, the weekend can be enjoyable for everyone.   He advises, though, that the outdoors aren’t just the purview of humans, there are plenty of animals out there as well that have just as much right as you have to be there. Sgt. Smith has some tips to help you avoid attracting wild animals, such as bears: Don’t store food and other attractants in tents, keep cooking areas away from your sleeping area and keep a clean camp. That applies to when you leave. If animals are rewarded by finding food when you are there or after you leave, they’ll be back looking for food when the next camper is at that spot as well. Sgt. Smith says it’s also important you not encroach on an animal’s space as it may provoke an attack. If you want to take a picture use a tele-photo lens.

C.O.S. officers will be out patrolling this weekend. They’ll be checking provincial parks, checking for angling licences, hunting licences, firearms, liquor infractions, life jackets for boaters and campfire compliance. Campfires are supposed to be no larger than half a metre by half a metre in size. You should have a shovel, some water or a fire extinguisher on hand, don’t leave your fire unattended and make absolutely sure it is out before you leave.

There are no campfire bans in place in northern B.C. at this time.
