Community Generosity ‘Rounds Up’ Lakeland Mills Fund
Prince George, BC – In some cases, it’s just nickels and dimes, others ’round up’ a loonie or twoonie – either way, the city’s four Save-On Foods locations have rounded up another $27-thousand dollars for the Lakeland Mills Fund.
For the past three weeks, the grocery stores have been inviting customers to round up their bills to the next nearest dollar, or more, with the proceeds going to the fund being administered by the Prince George Community Foundation. That fund is now over the quarter-million dollar mark – it was pegged at $216-thousand on Friday, but the $33-thousand from the CNC BBQ had yet to be added to the tally. "We’ve never done anything like this before to help support a community fundraising event," says Parkwood Store Manager, Dave Blackmore. "In general, we use Round Up to support BC Childrens’ Hospital, which is the number one charity for the Save-On Foods group. So this is a first, and we were really happy that we were able to execute this and we had support from our company to do something in light of the horrible circumstances at Lakeland Mills."
Blackmore says, "We see a tremendous amount of traffic through our four locations and it just takes little bits, but it certainly adds up in a hurry."
He adds the success of the three week campaign highlights the tremendous generosity of the community and how the catastrophe has touched everyone.
