All Star Peewees Sweep Double Header

Monday, May 21, 2012 @ 6:23 AM
Prince George, B.C.- The Prince George Lomak AA Knights baseball club swept a doubleheader on Sunday, pounding the ball in wins over Quesnel at Volunteer Park.

The Knights, the 11-12-year-old all-star team from the Prince George Youth Baseball Association, played strong defence, got plenty of strikes from the pitchers, ran the bases well and delivered 32 hits in total – most of them for extra-bases – in defeating Quesnel 15-2 and 35-2.

Nigel Thompson had two home runs, and Devin Sutton added another. Cole Schwing was the winning pitcher in the first game, while Devin Sutton was the winning pitcher in the second game.

Cole Schwing, Nigel Thompson and Jeremy Gervais handled pitching duties in the first game, while Devin Sutton, Jarin Sutton and Jordan Arnett were on the mound in the second game.

Members of the team are – Thompson, Schwing, Devin Sutton, Jarin Sutton, Michael Schwab, Michael Taylor, Ryan Hampe, Jeremy Gervais, Dustin Aldana, Cole Beacom, Zach Swanson, Scott Walters, Ryan Bachand, Quinten Astorino, Seth Lapre and Jordan Arnett. Hampe and Taylor were not able to play this weekend.

Coaches are Jim Swanson, Jason Schwing, Mike Sutton, James Sinclair, Darrell Gervais, Connor Flynn, Laine Thomsen and Jack Hinsche.

“The first game on Sunday was a lot closer than the score indicated, their starting pitcher kept us at bay and we only had a 4-2 lead going to the bottom of the fifth inning,” said Knights head coach Jim Swanson.

“We pulled away from there, but Quesnel pushed us and played very well. That’s a team that hasn’t had much time together yet, and they were missing some of their top players due either to injury or family reasons on the long weekend. In the second game, we really broke out on offence early and that can happen with youth sports. That Quesnel team is well-coached and we hope to meet up with them again for more exhibition games in June or July, they want to meet up with us when they have their full roster.”

The Knights, who are now 3-3 on the season (1-3 record in exhibition weekend in Chilliwack in April), will be in North Delta this coming weekend (May 25-27) for the prestigious John Main Memorial Classic tournament, played at Sunbury and Annieville Parks. The team will also be in tournaments in Kamloops (July long weekend) and Kelowna (mid-July), before representing the north region at the B.C. Minor Baseball Association’s Peewee AA provincial tournament in Chilliwack, Aug. 2-6.
