Northwood Curtailment Likely to Last 3 Weeks

Friday, June 1, 2012 @ 3:46 PM
Prince George, B.C.—Canfor has announced it has curtailed production at the Northwood Pulpmill to allow time to fully investigate last week’s failure of one of the two recovery boilers on site.

This is the incident which resulted in the mill being evacuated last Friday evening  ( see previous story)

There were no injuries reported in the incident but the number one recovery boiler has been shutdown to determine the cause of the malfunction. As a result, only one of the two production lines in the mill is currently operating.

Canfor says the cost of repair and the length of the curtailment won’t be known for certain until the detailed inspection of the facility has been completed, however initial estimates suggest the curtailment will be for at least three weeks.

That will mean the production of NBSK pulp will be reduced by about 25,000 tonnes.

Management intends to keep the second production line at the mill operating, and will move up  some of the  mill maintenance work that had been set to take place during a planned mill shutdown in September

Malfunction? They are damn lucky no one was killed.

With a shortage of wood chips this was an easy decision to get things back into balance again anyways.

It has nothing to do with the wood chips at the steam and recovery part of the process, they ie: Canfor, has been milking these boilers for years and now shit has hit the fan, run to failure, patch it as we go, now it will cost in down time, this system does not work. They used to have a month shut down years ago to take care of BIG problems, now they do mini shuts downs 3-7 days to limp it to the next problem. Corporate greed, eventually even the old dogs give up and fail.

It was not a simple failure, it was a massive explosion that as Denaljo wrote,
it was a miracle that no one died. Willy
the explosion was on the new redesigned recovery boiler that Canfor just spent alot of money on.

New Canfor terminology.

Explosion is now classified as malfunction.
