BC Hydro To Replace Aging Field Office In Prince George
BC Hydro will replace its office with a new facility by mid-2014
Prince George, BC – It has been a landmark at the corner of Westwood Drive and 22nd Avenue for more than 30-years, but BC Hydro says it’s ‘lights out’ time for its aging field office…
"We are officially starting work on a new district field office and operations facility to serve the Prince George and surrounding area," says Community Relations Coordinator, Dave Mosure. "(The current building) has reached the end of its life and the cost to upgrade it would have been greater than the cost of new construction."
While there is no dollar figure available yet on the total project cost, construction costs are pegged at $25-million dollars. Work is already underway on a new visitor and employee parking lot – the new building will sit on the existing lot.
The new facility is expected to be complete by mid-2014. A ground-breaking ceremony is scheduled for one week from today.

So they are putting in a new parking lot and then will demolish and build a new building?
LOL
using smart meter money……
Interesting to see that this is the way they announce a new building of some substance.
Where is it going on the property? What will it look like? Etc. etc.
The building has actually been there since about 1973. It really is a building that 40 years ago was thought to have a longer lifetime than it is going to have. It really is too bad that in this day of “green” building and sustainable way of doing business, that such a project has to be totally demolished after 40 years. I guess it is our dollars, so anything goes.
Wonder what pretend use of wood they will make in the building.
A field office, eh? Conjures up a tent, or a bunch of Atco trailers hooked together …. ;-)
BTW, if they have to replace such an office here, then they really need to start to replace all the government office buildings in Ottawa and Victoria that are that age and older.
For example, this office building in Ottawa was built in 1964 and is one of the 5 or so in Tunney’s Pasture in Ottawa considered to be in good shape by the feds who have done a survey of building conditions from the 1950s to mid 1960s in that area.

I know that the quality of construction specifications of both buildings is comparable, even thought they obviously look different.
So why is a building not good enough for BC HYdro, but good enough for the Feds.
It seems odd that they will break ground only a week after announcing their intentions. Don’t they have to get municipal approval of the construction plans?
Actually they broke ground weeks ago. See above photos ^^^^
“the new building will sit on the existing lot.” actually parking lot.
This is the green way of things, spending money for no real reason.
“(The current building) has reached the end of its life and the cost to upgrade it would have been greater than the cost of new construction.”
What a crock of horse apples.
That building is steel structure/brick construction and is as solid today as it was 40 years ago.
All the mealy mouthed mumbling we hear from the various levels of government about sustainable building practices, their acceptance of LEED etc. is proven to be a lie ( which is what governments do best ) when they demolish a perfectly good building to erect a new one.
Now I know why my hydro bills have two tiers, to raise money for stupid projects.
metalman.
I wonder when the Victoria Medical Building will be replaced ….. given that Doctors pay the rent, probably never … LOL
The Royal Bank building should be repalced before the Hydor Building. It is about 10 years older….
I mean this is government at its stupidest …. no roads maintenance … but ..
I will echo what others have said, the whole thing does seem like a tremendous waste of money.
When you are spending other peoples money cost is not an impediment.
Hydro, like Governments, ICBC, etc; have no respect for peoples dollars.
Over 50% of the houses in Prince George are over 30 years old. Maybe we should rebuild the whole City on tax/hydro/icbc/ dollars.
Much like the over expensive Police Station, it is expenditures like this that make people sick, and want to puke.
We certainly need some way too get to these people and get control of our money.
New computer systems, new City office building for purchasing, new Police Station, New Hydro, CN Building on first ave. to house IPG, and a few other drones.
A lot of the space in Hydro’s building sat empty for years, because they closed down their office here in Prince George.
This is just another of many scams that take place in Prince George at taxpayers expense.
Have a nice day.
My first thought when I seen the machines stripping the lot was that BC Hydro had sold the building. Nope. Just money being peed away.
Right on something new!
