‘Fields of Streams’ Means No Games

Prince George, B.C.- The City of Prince George is advising that all sports fields are closed for the this afternoon and this evening.
The City says the heavy rainfall has made the closure necessary for player safety reasons, to keep the fields in the best condition possible and to avoid costly repairs.
The fields will be reassessed tomorrow

Has this happened before?
Are the soccer fields, for instance, not designed to deal with a total of half an inch of rain over a 12+ hour period?
Soccer is played rain or shine, I thought.
One thing to consider Gus, the amount of rain recorded at the airport is not always the same amount in other areas. That and the expected rain to come yet, maybe it is best to close the feilds for a day to save the wear and tear.
My kids have been in ball for years and while its not often, yes they have been closed before. I’d guess at average every second year or so for a rough estimate. Doesn’t usually make the news though, thanks Ben and Elaine
It ain’t just the rain folks. It’s them damn pesky tent caterpillars com’in outa the trees and cruising through the grass too, by the tousands, now that’s slippery.
Wonder how many more excuses we’ll hear from the city on reasons for not getting rid of them….
“Soccer is played rain or shine, I thought” .. not when it destroys the fields…this is not the professional leagues. Dont know where you got those figures from, but I can assure you the fields in town do not have that type of drainage to handle that amount of rain and still be used safely and without wrecking sensitive areas. As for if this has happened in the past, it has many times, they have even been closed over an entire weekend because of rain before, maybe it just wasn’t reported in the paper before.
How would you get rid of them slim? Blanket the city with pesticide? They have a cycle and they are best left alone to go through it and be gone for another 7 to 10 years.
I grew up playing soccer in Surrey/Langley. I have partially webbed hands and feet due to playing in torrential downpours. Whats with shutting the fields down here?
Another case of “poor planning” by dough heads perhaps?
Dragonmaster,
really? you have to harp about this as well? Give it up, I am willing to bet 95% of the kids are glad they are cancelled, its freaking raining, let the grass sit, let the kids stay home.
If you wanna play outside today, move back to Surrey/Langley.
But: “How would you get rid of them slim? Blanket the city with pesticide? They have a cycle and they are best left alone to go through it and be gone for another 7 to 10 years.”
Agreed (re: caterpillars). I’m not sure exactly what people expect the City to do, and how much it would cost to fight an unwinnable war.
Sheesh…..closing the fields for rain is very common. Down on the lower rainland they have a lot of all weather fields.
And blaming the city for caterpillars……sheesh!
