Phase One Report on Health Risks of Oil and Gas Industry Report Released

Wednesday, June 6, 2012 @ 1:20 PM

Prince George, B.C. – The report on the phase one study of potential human health risks associated with oil and gas activities in Northeastern B.C.  has been released.

Conducted by the Fraser Basin Council, this first phase focused on public engagement to gather the concerns.

Many of the respondents attributed personal health problems — such as asthma and bronchitis, cancer, stress and sleep deprivation — directly to exposure to oil and gas operations. Others believe their health is being  compromised by exposure to hazards through a natural pathway, such as air, water or food. Examples include exposure to hydrogen sulphide, contaminated water and diesel dust, and ingestion of adversely affected livestock and/or wildlife.

The Phase one report says while there were a variety of issues raised, seven themes became evident:

o Personal Health Issues

o Environmental Pathways of Exposure

o Related Environmental Issues

o Changes to Community

o Community Service Issues

o Oil and Gas Operational Issues

o Institutional Framework Issues.

The respondents agreed that phase 2, which is a scientific assessment of the concerns raised in phase one,  should get underway as soon as possible. The Province expects to issue an RFP for phase 2 this month, and have phase 2 complete by early 2014.

The Province is taking steps to address air quality concerns identified in phase one, and will be enhancing the air quality monitoring network in the northeast region.

This three year process will call for a half a million dollar financial commitment from both government and industry for the first year to design, set up and coordinate. The air quality data is to be easily accessible to the public.

The final phase  of the 3 phase project will see the findings reported to the Province, stakeholders and the public.
