Barkerville Gets Funding

Wednesday, June 13, 2012 @ 2:50 PM

Barkerville, B.C.- Premier Christy Clark  visited Barkerville today to announce $2.4 million  to support Barkerville’s operations as Western North America’s largest historic site.

The funding announcement  is part of the $21 million dollars that will be  available over three years for the eleven  heritage properties in B.C.

"We are delighted with this commitment to three-year funding," explained Sue Morhun, chair of Barkerville Heritage Trust. "Having  financial certainty allows us to continue our stewardship of this world-class heritage attraction in the Cariboo."

Barkerville has more than 125  historic buildings and is celebrating  the 150th  anniversary of the Cariboo Gold rush.  It was  1862 when Billy Barker found gold  at Williams Creek, a discovery  that sparked a gold fever that brought more than 100 thousand people to the Cariboo between 1862 and 1870.    In the 1860’s Barkerville was the largest city west of Chicago and north of San Francisco and was instrumental in the founding of the Colony of British Columbia.

Sounds great. But there’s no due date for the grant as with many of the other Liberal promises. More Liberal lies I think.

Looks like it’s going to be a long campaign, leading up to the election next May. Get used to being bribed with your own money.

SO a total of $2.4 million over 3 years … $800,0000 per year?

So, will whoever might be in power, should the BCLiberals not win the election, top that up to $1.5 million a year for the last two years with money collected from increased taxes? ;-)

The street through Barkerville is a lot better than some of ours. Get right on it. You are? Carry on then.

“Get used to being bribed with your own money.”

Ha ha. Awesome.

Elections are good to us taxpayers. We get some of our money back!

Actually we always get our money back. We just have differnt opinions on how it should have been divided up.

Then, of course, sometimes they do not take enough money, so they run a deficit to be paid in other ways in the future.

Of course, if another party comes to power, get ready for the now standard practice of “holy chit, we did not think things were this bad in the BC financial situation.”

Hey, if the opposition can’t figure from all the access they get, how the heck are we ever supposed to figure it out?

Something has to change. I mean this is the 21st century and we have enough computing tools and communication tools that everyone can be made aware of the state of the union.

But hey, those we put in place to operate the country, provinces, and cities for us must love it when they leave us ignorant.

The government needs to support our history. Should offer free tuition for post secondary history classes IMO.

“The government needs to support our history. Should offer free tuition for post secondary history classes IMO. “

The people need to support our history. We rely on government for far too much, imo. Free tuition? lol.

Bang on JohnnyBelt for the statement “the people need to support our history”.

This town supports tearing down and putting up a sign with pictures and some words on it. They can’t even get that right. Some of the pictures of the Northern on the City signs are actually of buildings that stood where the Bay store used to be (currently City Furniture).

Hey Harbinger … the streets of Barkerville are paved with gold ….. ;-)

Barkerville Historic Town is indeed a national treasure and world class heritage site….whenever we have family in from overseas or from across the country…first stop is Barkerville and they are thoroughly impressed. Even then, we make a trip out annually. The Interp. programs are first class and I believe that this is MONEY WELL SPENT! The managing organization will make every dollar turn rubber…stretching it to the ultimate for the maximum return – unlike most projects bought with my money.
