Flood Threat Eases for the Weekend

Sunday, June 24, 2012 @ 4:03 AM
Prince George, B.C. – The City of Prince George Emergency Operations Centre is not expecting to see increased river activity here until Monday at the earliest.

Communications Manager Chris Bone says even if the region gets a significant rainfall, it will take a while for the effects to impact the river at South Fort George. Bone says “we’re thinking that unless the situation changes dramatically, we’re expecting that increased activity, if it’s called for, will likely be  Monday.”   As well Bone says “it’s really the combination of the snow melt (in the mountains) and the rain that would cause the river to really elevate its level. So the snow melt on its own, although of a concern, is not as big a concern unless it’s combined with that rainfall.”

The B.C. River Forecast Centre has downgraded the flood watch on the Fraser River upstream of Prince George and downstream from Quesnel to the Fraser Canyon. The Fraser at South Fort George is sitting at 9.086 metres this morning.  Flood stage is 9.4.  The high streamflow advisory on the Nechako River at Prince George remains in effect, and the flood watch continues on the Quesnel River.

The Bulkley-Skeena flood watch has been upgraded.   The Bukley at Smithers has risen 20 centimetres since Thursday, with another 10 to 40 centimetre increase expected by Monday.
