Flood Watch Ended For Fraser River In Our Region

Saturday, June 30, 2012 @ 9:49 AM

Prince George, BC – The BC River Forecast Centre has ended a High Streamflow Advisory for the Fraser River upstream from Prince George and through to Hope; however, an advisory remains in place for the lower Fraser.

The river level at South Fort George is currently 8.3-metres and is expected to hold steady through the weekend, with the potential for some minor rises, but below levels of concern.

The forecast centre says the river’s flow has dropped from a peak of 11,300m3/s, to a current flow of 10,700m3/s at Hope and a peak level of 6.25-metres in Mission has dropped slightly this morning to 9.23-metres.

The centre says an improvement in weather and declining snowmelt rates mean flows from the major tributaries to the lower Fraser (the Fraser River upstream of Prince George and the Thompson River) are dropping, and flows are the lower stretch of the river are expected to continue to recede throughout the weekend.

The river forecast centre has added a Flood Watch Advisory for the Stuart River and Stuart Lake at Fort St. James.  The river is currently flowing at a 10-year rate of 467m3/s and is rising.  The lake level is expected to rise over the next two weeks 10-20cm above its present level.

A High Streamflow Advisory remains in place in the northwest region of the province, where levels on the Skeena River, Bulkley River and tributaries are holding steady or rising slightly due to recent wet weather.  The centre says levels are not expected to climb to where they were earlier this week, but significant drops are not expected in the region until next week.
