Safe Weekend on the Roads

Prince George, B.C. – A heavy police presence on the highways throughout the region on the weekend was successful says North District RCMP Staff Sergeant Pat McTiernan.
“We had no fatalities, and only a few minor property damage crashes. We are ecstatic, that once again, we had a safe long weekend.” It is the second straight long weekend with no fatalities or serious injuries throughout the north central region.
Staff Sergeant McTiernan says that doesn’t mean they weren’t busy on the highways. With units patrolling from Hixon to the Pine Pass and from Vanderhoof to the Alberta Border, the RCMP Traffic Services pulled several vehicles off the roads.
“We issued 4 IRPs (immediate roadside prohibitions) for alcohol and there were seven cases of excessive speeding.” That means, in all, there were 11 vehicles towed off the highways .
McTiernan says no one was left at the side of the road, that in each case, arrangements were made to get people to a safe place.
High speeds recorded ranged from 145 to 173 km per hour.
McTiernan says some drivers were surprised at the type of vehicle police are now using as they no longer stick to just the typical “Crown Vic” ghost car. “I had one driver who said it wasn’t fair that we were using a pick up truck, but I told him, he wouldn’t have to worry about what we are using if he stuck to the speed limit.”
The bottom line, says McTiernan, is that people are getting the message.

Yes, they get the message on long weekends and then go back to business as usual when all of the RCMP go back to dealing with drug crime etc. BTW – the weather probably had something to do with it as well – rain – no parties in the bush.
So where were you guys this morning when a lady passed me on a double solid line going uphill on a blind spot. Or when the Jetta passed me like I was standing still – and I was already over the limit myself.
It’s great you put an emphasis on long weekends, but if we’re ever going to see a long term reduction in accidents, there has to be regular enforcement everywhere, and at anytime. The most dangerous speed to drive in this town – is the speed limit. Anything less than 10 k over get’s you tailgated and passed in the most dangerous places- because everyone knows, the cops are busy elsewhere. Not that it’s the RCMP’s fault, it’s the fault of politicians who like pictures of big dope busts, and are quick with condolences when someone is killed and injured by idiot drivers.
one driver who said it wasnât fair that we were using a pick up truck
Holy Cow, NOT FAIR??? What, did they feel entrapped, too??
Driver, Grow Up, try slowing down, the officer may have saved your life.
Peoples mentality, or lack thereof, never fails to astound me.
Police State working as intented. Everyone stay home and don’t drive no accidents
Report dangerous drivers as you see it happen and then pull over to talk to the cop when they have that person pulled over down the road. They will get a ticket, and you will be a witness if they dispute and it goes to court.
Peegee, I so wish it worked that way. I saw a car pull out in front of two motorcycles – who weren’t speeding, they smoked up their tires skidding to a stop, and then he meandered down foothills at 60 k after cutting them off. Then he drifted into the bike lane and nearly clocked a guy on his bike. So I phoned the cops with a license plate, vehicle description, direction of travel, etc. And then, to add the icing to the cake, while I’m talking to the dispatcher, the light turns green on foothills, and he turns left onto nechako- cutting off the car in the oncoming lane – he didn’t have a left turn advance – just thought he did. Anyhow, I never heard anything back from the cops.
It does work, but maybe only on highways. I reported a driver who made 2 passes on double solids, cops had him pulled over about 20 minutes later. I stopped, gave a statement, and was told I may have to testify if it gets disputed.
Its the only way to stop dangerous drivers. They rarely make a move like that in front of police, and the police can’t be everywhere.
The cops wouldn’t need to have such a high profile on the roads if there weren’t so many idiot drivers.
It was great to see the police out on the highways this weekend. Way to go guys! Guess what, people were dealing with it! Most were driving carefully. Too bad we couldn’t see that kind of a presence all the time. Guess we’ll have to talk to our politicians.
It wasn’t fair??? Well, neither was his speeding. So now what, if another driver calls his driving in and he gets caught that way, is he going to call that unfair too? What a crybaby!
