Prince George, BC – The Prince George Public Library has set a lofty goal with the launch of its Summer Reading Program for kids – to raise $600 to buy book boxes in Haiti.

Library Communications Coordinator, Andrea Palmer, says, "This year we’re continuing in our new tradition of reading for philanthropy and introducing children to a global perspective as they do their summer reading."  Last year’s program raised funds for a drinking water well in Northern Uganda.  Seven-year-old Euan Murray really rose to that challenge, raising $250 towards that project.

Over the next two months, city youngsters can read books, gather interesting facts, and complete various activities associated with weekly themes.  For every completed activity they tell a librarian about, the Friends of the Library Society will donate $1 towards the Haiti project. 

The cost to purchase a ‘library in a box’ for Haiti is $60, the Prince George Public Library is hoping to purchase 10 such boxes for the impoverished country, which continues to struggle almost two years after a devastating earthquake.
