Police Hope Outdoor Enthusiasts Will Help Spot Grow Ops

Thursday, July 12, 2012 @ 3:57 AM
Prince George, B.C.- North District RCMP are calling on all outdoor enthusiasts to keep their eyes open for grow ops while in the back country.

It has been nearly 2 years since police dismantled a grow op east of Prince George  near Eaglet Lake. That  grow op had about 18,000 plants in varying stages of growth.   That massive grow op was discovered by a person on an ATV who called in a tip to CrimeStoppers.

Just because that grow op was dismantled, doesn’t mean the operators won’t try to set up in another, more rural area in an effort to avoid detection.

Outdoor Marijuana Grow operations in the summer months are increasing in the Cariboo Region as rural properties (purchased or government owned) are isolated and secluded from the public eye.  These sites are generally located near a water source such as a creek , pond or small lake.

Many growers use pesticides, herbicides and other chemicals that contaminate the soil and filter into the ground water which can have a hazardous effect on the environment.
In 2010 Prince George Crime Stoppers (call center for the Cariboo Region) received 98 TIPS of possible Marihuana Grow Operations and in 2011, 84 TIPS were identified. These TIPS included a number of Outdoor Marihuana Grow sites.

The North District Marihuana Enforcement Team (NDIME) is encouraging the public to call anonymously, in hopes to identify outdoor marihuana grow operations.

“We are asking outdoor enthusiasts who may be out exploring on their ATVs or hiking in unchartered areas to be aware of any suspicious vehicles parked on remote trails or service roads” states Cst. Lesley Smith North District Media Relations Officer. “If you do come across something suspicious or locate an outdoor marihuana grow operation please note down the GPS coordinates, and report that information to police or make an anonymous call to Crime Stoppers.”

If your information leads to the location of an outdoor marihuana grow operation you may be eligible for a cash reward through Crime Stoppers. Call CRIME STOPPERS at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477)

Crack and meth does not grow on trees ? Lets grow Hemp..and then they will not have to worry about out door crops..

“please note down the GPS coordinates”

Right, everyone needs and therefore has a gps, inconceivable that you could move around the bush without one. Just like everyone has and needs the latest cell ‘phone’
What would David Thompson and Simon Fraser say?
And what does “note down” mean, anyway?
Is it paramilitary speak?

Do you still have a Betamax VCR? No, GPS isn’t a ‘necessity’, but it is a nice piece of technology for the bush. Probably saved a lot of people from getting lost.

“Note down” is a relatively common english idiom which might be difficult to understand for an ESL person who is just learning english. ;-)

For anyone who thinks that grow ops in the bushes are not a major concern here is something to think about…about 3 yrs ago some friends of mine were 4 wheeling up behind Dragon lake in Quesnel and were skirting the edge of a cutblock when one of the 4 wheelers flipped fortunately no body was hurt but it was found that a bear trap had snared the front tire and stopped the atv dead in its tracks. My friends had found a small grow op and were quite spooked as they had found 4 more traps and a nasty hidden pit filled with razor wire.

If you think it is harmless give your head a shake growers will go to any lengths to protect their grow op. Think about it the next time your out there.

Harvest then report.

I know nothing about growing pot. If the stuff grows like weeds outdoors in this northern climate, why do people construct indoor grow ops with huge lights, fans and heaters?

Higher quality and production.

Legalize the stuff and be done with it, the police could be out writing tickets and raising revenue for the city instead of fighting a losing battle against pot.

HAHAHAHAH write down the gps locations. I hop the outdoor enthusiasts don’t get shot at while they are stopped “marking the gps location”. why don’t the cops use the helicopter us tax payers pay for? why don’t you guys do your own job which you are paid to do rather than putting an unpaid civilian at risk? what is this world coming too. Next were going to be told to try and stop a murder in the act with our bare hands. GET A LFE

Wow…who would believe Obama went to Columbia and Harvard.

Gee, thanks Gus, I will note that down. As for Betamax, no thanks. I’ll stick with good old 8 m.m. film.
