Traffic Fine Revenue Down From Previous Years

Thursday, July 12, 2012 @ 3:59 AM

Prince George, B.C.- The City of Prince George will be getting just over a million dollars from the Province  as its share of traffic fine revenue this year.

The amount ($1,036,299) is the second lowest amount in 7 years.

Last year, the amount delivered to the City was $1,592,367.00

Here’s how the City’s share of traffic fine revenue has shaped up over the past seven years.

Year

Amount

2005

$1,128,995.00

2006

$1,144,447.00

2007

$1,287,487.00

2008

$1,303,089.00

2009

$2,016,531.00

2010

$   506,602.00

2011

$1,592,367.00

2012

$1,036,299.00

2013*

$   822,540.00

2014*

$   822,540.00

*The province has a payment schedule which it sends to eligible communities, and this is the amount the schedule expects to pay to Prince George in those years.

Because the Province advises communities on what the payments are expected to be to allow communities to plan their budgets, Prince George sets aside some of the dollars from a high payment year ( such as 2009 or 2011) into a reserve fund to be used to top up the amounts in years when the revenue is predicted to be lower.

 The grants come from ticket fines and court-imposed fines on violation tickets. The amount of money a municipality receives is based on its contribution to total municipal policing costs.

The  Province delivers 100 per cent of net traffic fine revenues to communities.

Traffic fine revenue inversely proportional to the amount of money spent on road repair. A person would need a vehicle set up for the Dekar rally to speed on some of our streets:(

Pick any intersection and plop a cop that revenue would go way up. They could ticket the light runners, speeders, distracted drivers and mom and dad teaching the kids how to ride a bike on a sidewalk.

If the RCMP would give me authority to stop drivers i could drive revenue way up by pulling over all the cell phone talkers i see everyday.

Try speed traps on Peden Hill and going north on the Hart and you would double the fine payback money. There’s a Tims on each for breaktimes. As for cell and texting fines, stand on any corner at anytime and ” show me the money”

another great spot for them to sit is the 4-way stop at 10th and carney. I have seen so many blow that stop recently. As well as the playground zone on upland both in front of Vanbien and the one farther down towards Diefenbaker. NO ONE does the speed limit for either play ground zones.

Another one of these high level statistics that prompt one to wonder why the huge variances, especially the following

2009 $2,016,531.00
2010 $ 506,602.00

Was the above variance the result of the government using a different formula, RCMP working to rule in 2010 or whatever.

I would have thought that such a huge swing would not be there from year to year.

The formula used to calculate fines revenue as I understand it goes as:

Provincial total of fines for the year divided by the percent amount of people living in a city equals fines revenue

I am with you myopin as long as the speed traps are also targeting those driving under the limit as well as the dangerous drivers that love to idle along in the blind spot of the semi trucks in the right lane.

They could also make a fortune at the double left turn as well with the improper lane usage and texting that goes on there.

What I’d really like, is for someone to make up their mind what the speed limit is, and then enforce it. Drive the speed limit, get tailgated, drive over the limit, get ticketed. I still have no idea what the “right” speed is for Chief Lake. There’s some sign that says 80, tried it, too slow, tried 85, too slow, tried 90, seemed okay, but I think cops ticket at 10 k over. Maybe they could release an official – this is how much you can break the law by and we’ll give you a wave rather than a ticket.

Sounds like time to contract out these jobs of writing tickets!! Everyone of you that sees all these infractions could go into business….instead of using all the high priced union police officers.

I agree Jim13135 . Maybe use the auxillery police or community policing staff

We could hire students to man some photo radar unit’s….what better way to get young people to move into Prince George than offering them a good paying job??

I have never seen a minimum speed sign in Pg billyinpg so you can go whatever speed you like up to the maximum.
