City Applying for CIIF Dollars

Tuesday, July 17, 2012 @ 3:53 AM
Prince George, B.C. – The City of Prince George is going to apply for  grants from the Community Infrastructure Improvement Fund with the Federal Government.

Under this program, municipalities can apply for   dollars to support the rehabilitation or improvement of community infrastructure such as cultural centre, libraries, recreational and tourism facilities.

Prince George will file for funding to assist with three projects, of which two are already fully funded in the 2012 capital plan.
Those two projects are:
·        Fort George Park Upgrades phase one, which has a budget of $300 thousand dollars and includes the construction of a picnic shelter and two washrooms.
·        Library Elevator upgrade, which has a price tag of $130 thousand dollars.

The third project which is unfounded at this point, is the replacement of the Elksentre roof. This project is expected to cost $70 thousand dollars and is on the list of unfounded projects for 2013.

All three may qualify for up to 50% of the cost through this CIIF.

If successful, the City could   receive up to $250 thousand dollars in revenue.

The deadline to apply for the funding is August 2nd.

Do they know the meaning of the word “manage”. I supose the Core Reiview will help then.
Cheers

Which then means we will have to find another quarter of a million dollars taken from our taxes or borrowed to fund the complete project. Huh?????

Awesome, let’s make Prince George something to write home about! :)

Trackster ….. please re-read the report.

1. The City has passed a budget of $300,000 and $130,000 or two projects in 2012. We are all paying taxes for that this year already. That is $430,000.

2. If we get 50% funding for those projects from the feds (i.e. our friends in Ontario and Quebec will be paying much of that), then we have $215,000 left over. The taxpayer in PG will be spending less, not more.

3. If the $70,000 Elks roof project is also included, then we will have that “free” and have $145,000 left over to pave some sidewalks this year.

Of course, if we do not do anything, we can save ALL that money, let the kids play in the rain, let the elevator in the library crash, and let the Elks roof leak …. sort of follow the principles we have done with the roads ….. doing it the PG way … ;-)

If memory serves the Fort George park improvements have been put on the shelf and that money directed to road repair.

If what I read on HQ PG is correct, city hall math is quite different than what I learned. The budget for the playground at Duchess park was set at 666k…….they got 26k in donations ….. now the budget is 692k?????

You would think that if they got a donation the city portion would now be 640k. Maybe they were not good at solving problems in class…a train left Vancouver traveling at 60mph and another left Toronto at 95 mph because of gunfire…..

LOL …. I heard that while listening to the Council livestream ….. did a double take and was going to replay it today to make sure I heard right ….

There are several possibilities of how tha may play out. One is that the project budget is the 666k …. maybe they got a donation to provide something they had removed ….. a special interest group then came up with 26k to put it back in.

But that is conjecture. One often has to read between the lines when listening to City Council. Those who are on Council and Staff should have a working knowledge of what is going on and it would take far too long to explain every single thing to onlookers.

That being said, I think they do have to try a little harder on occasion by putting themselves into the shoes of the viewing public.

I sure wouldn’t blame our underpaid teachers for mathematical mistakes done by our city council but I would most certainly advise council to go back to elementry school for a refresher cource. (ie 666k-26k=640k). just saying
