Just before 7:30 AM, an officer on patrol near the intersection of Highway 97 and Highway 16 attempted to pull over a vehicle, a green Ford Expedition. Immediately upon activation of the emergency equipment, the driver of the Expedition accelerated to a high rate of speed, northbound on Highway 97. Within seconds, the fleeing SUV rear ended a black GMC Jimmy, causing the drivers of both northbound vehicles to lose control of their vehicles. Both SUV’s crossed the centre meridian into the oncoming lanes.
The Expedition collided with a utility pole between highway 97 and Westwood Drive. The Jimmy came to rest a short distance away. Both vehicles suffered significant damage.
The two drivers were the only occupants of the vehicles. Both were transported by ambulance to the University Hospital of Northern BC with non-life threatening injuries. The driver of the Expedition was released from medical care and immediately taken into custody by police as part of an Impaired Driving investigation.
Police say the 29-year-old man provided two breath samples of more than double the legal limit. The accused in a Class 7 (New) driver. He recently moved to Prince George from the Fort St James area. He has been released from custody and is due in court September 12th on a number of criminal code charges.
The driver of the GMC Jimmy is a 63-year-old Prince George resident.
Power to the area including the Pine Centre Mall was effected by the collision. BC Hydro attended the scene, secured the pole and restored power. A Collision Reconstructionist from the RCMP’s North District Traffic Services Section was on scene gathering evidence, with traffic diverted around the area.
The matter remains under investigation. Anyone who witnessed the incident is asked to contact the Prince George RCMP detachment.

If I could set the drunk driving laws…
All would be mandatory
1st offence
-Jail for 1 year, then 2 years probation
-Vehicle is confiscated (even if it is not yours)
-$10,000 fine
-150 hours community service
2nd offence
-Jail for 5 years, probation for 10 years
-Vehicle is confiscated
-$150,000 fine
-500 hours community service
3rd offence
-dead
there is NO excuse to drive while drunk, NONE
If you are drunk, there are services out there to help you so you dont drive.
Parents would actually LOVE to have their kid call and ask for a ride so they dont drive, or come home in a taxi and ask for a little money because they dont have enough to pay the taxi driver.
If these were actually instituted, there would be almost NO drunk drivers on the road(maybe one or two cases a YEAR), and hey, you can mess up twice before you die….
this is just my opinion on the issue
Overkill. Your opinion sucks, in my opinion.
Great job to the RCMP for catching this guy and then standing out in the heat all day investigating the accident. I hope the driver of the jimmy is ok.
And to sum42guy2k you are right on the money!
I’d switch the 3rd offence in Sum42’s list to Life In Jail. Death is a bit on the side of overly harsh…. but if they kill somebody that’s another kettle of fish.
not-so-random…. your blasé response is part of the problem with this issue.
How does the saying go “Let the one without Sin throw the first Stone”
Hmmm, hope you don’t have kids Sum42.
We have sufficient laws on the books to look after impaired drivers. Problem is the Police, and the Government do not want to put these people in jail because of the cost.
Its much cheaper to fine them, and collect their money than put them in jail, where it costs the Government money.
Do people really beleive that we are so stupid that we couldnt solve some of these problems if the Government, police, etc; had the will to do so.
Laws that are presenlty on the books, that could be used in addition to the ones they just brought in recently.
1. Impaired Driving (as opposed to driving with a blood alcohol contents in excess of .05 or .08%.
2. Dangerous Driving
3. Driving without due care and attention
4. Criminal negligence causing death.
The second offence for impaired driving gets you an automatic 14 days in jail. How many people have gone to jail for 14 days in the past year or two.
Seems the Government would sooner have you pay a fine.
Dont waste your time trying to come up with new laws for impaired driving. Just apply the laws that are on the books.
Blotto at 7:30 AM? Seems to me that this guy has some issues. Cops find blood in his alcohol sample?
True enough… more than double the legal limit, so that’s what… over 1.0 or over 1.6? Either way, this dude likely never went to bed from the night before.
Good to see Prince George’s #1 crime fighter on scene when we drove by!I know the city is a lot better place with him on scene!
The RCMP can rest easy when he is in action!!!!!!!!
Since driving is a privilege not a right then when you get a drunk driving charge first offence 10 years driving suspension and 1 year in jail and loss of your vehicle 2nd offence no driving for life and loss of the vehicle.
Before I get corrected… best correct myself…. 0.10 or 0.16. I’m not sure I want to see what 1.6 looks like.
Palopu: Are you crazy? The Police are not part of the problem. They want these creeps nailed. It’s the courts. They keep freeing them and making the police feel useless. Judges need to lose a relative to a drunken driver before they will even act.
Not-so-random is likely a drunk or convicted drunken driver.
Doubleeagle: Who is Prince George’s #1 crime fighter? Were you being sarcastic? You didn’t mean Constable Useless because you said “Him” not her. Just curious.
Rage on internet tough guys!
What is amazing to me is that he was released. He broke several laws, some of them quite serious, and yet they let him walk away.
Driving under the influence
Criminal evasion
Criminal negligence causing bodily injury And damage to public & private property
I wonder if he’ll be a future face in the endless Free Press Wanted parade of people for whom bench warrants are written because they just don’t show up to their court dates. Do you really think someone this reckless and irresponsible is going to pay for all the damage he caused today, which I’d ballpark at around $30k? Not to mention any injuries suffered by the other gentleman. Sixty-three year old bodies don’t bounce back so good.
These people need to be jailed until the final disposition of their case. If we don’t have sufficient resources, then raise our taxes and develop them. We need more walls, more bars, more guards, and all the necessary judiciary resources. These people need to be treated like the criminals they are. They need to lose their jobs, their homes and their respect in the community. Their names and faces should be plastered on a wall of shame for all to see.
”Overkill. Your opinion sucks, in my opinion” .Should have shot the mother fu33er right there on the road in my opinion . guess he didnt have a stapler with him
So, what was the original infraction that caused the Mountie to turn on lights and siren and begin a pursuit in the first place?
Seems to me that in pursuit of someone at high speed maybe contributed to the accident as well.
Chester: I’m willing to bet this guy was all over the road with a BAC of twice the legal limit. The RCMP officer likely observed this erratic driving and attempted to make the stop. We all see how that went.
What do you want them to do? Let them go?
Chester, your doing allot of assuming and trying the old switch and bait on the real story.
Bad on you.
Albus Antiquus Vir! No assumptions at all. I am just asking a question. Don’t get so defensive. By your comments, you must know the real story?
Mercenary! I didn’t suggest letting anyone go. But, there are other ways to put this person out of service without endangering the lives of others. I’m just asking whether a high pursuit chase within the city was an appropriate decision.
Chester,
what the original infraction was has no relevance. The most important fact is that as soon as the emergency lights were activated the suspect fled.
What is the RCMP to do, never activate their emergency lights? The story is pretty clear.
Chester, the report says:
“an officer on patrol near the intersection of Highway 97 and Highway 16 attempted to pull over a vehicle, a green Ford Expedition. Immediately upon activation of the emergency equipment, the driver of the Expedition accelerated to a high rate of speed, northbound on Highway 97. Within seconds, the fleeing SUV rear ended a black GMC Jimmy,”.
The operative words are “within seconds”. Doesn’t sound like a “chase” to me, in that short distance.
Kudos to the police for doing THEIR part of the job. Too bad the guy was let out at all. I think people like that should be held until their court date with no time granted as served. Period.
