Safety Urged For Participants In Nechako River Float
Prince George, BC – Prince George RCMP and their partner agencies will have three boats patrolling the Nechako River later today, as participants in what’s become an annual event get set to float from Wilkins Park in Miworth at noon to Cottonwood Island Park.
Earlier this week, RCMP reminded would-be participants that organizers have taken no safety precautions – the event is in its 4th year and was initiated via social media and has spread by word of mouth. (photo at left courtesy RCMP)
While the RCMP does not support the event, officers will be out on the water with members of the Conservation Officers Service and Prince George Search and Rescue’s swift water recovery team.
Police are offering the following safety tips:
- a properly functioning and properly sized life jacket is essential for anyone on the water – no matter how strong of a swimmer you are, the river is stronger and very cold. Being a good swimmer is no excuse for not having a life jacket; (photo at right shows floaters in close proximity to heavily wooded shore courtesy RCMP)
- floatation devices of higher quality are recommended. Although the river is full of objects that can puncture even the best-made inflatables, cheap inflatables meant for a pool can puncture more easily and put the user(s) at increased risk. An inflatable with multiple air compartments should be used
Corporal Craig Douglass says, "Prince George RCMP and our public safety partners are urging the public to avoid taking part in this event."

The anti fun police are out in force again! The rest of the year they couldn’t care less….but turn it into a community outing and here come the fun police. I suppose they had to bring a jet boat from Prince Rupert again?
I say have fun all you like, take all the precautions they recommend esle get charged for your rescue! Have a nice float.

Hope they do not make waves and capsize floatation devices.
Jim, could you please give it a rest? If they rescued a relative of yours from the river, would you still be complaining? They are there because some people just don’t know how to have fun safely. Jeez!
Anyone who goes on the river without first measuring the perils and counteracting them, deserves to drown. We don’t need dumb people like that.
Have fun everyone. Don’t be stupid out on the river :)
