New Ranking Reflects Drop In Violent Crimes In PG Last Year

Saturday, July 28, 2012 @ 5:03 AM

Prince George, BC – When Maclean’s magazine dubbed Prince George the ‘most dangerous community’ for the second straight year last December, Prince George RCMP Superintendent Eric Stubbs said it did not reflect the significant progress that had been made on serious crime in the city…

The latest Crime Severity Index survey released by Statistics Canada does just that – just out with its CSI for 2011, Stats Can says Prince George now ranks 14th on the Violent Crime Severity Index out of 239 communities with populations over 10,000.  That compares to its 7th place ranking last year.  The data reflects the fact the city did not have any murders last year, compared to seven homicides in 2010.

On the Overall Crime Severity Index, Prince George once again ranks 14th, compared to 11th last year.  North Battleford, Saskatchewan, with a population of 14,000, ranked number one, while Thompson, Manitoba was second.

As a whole, the province of BC saw its Overall CSI drop by 7.42-percent in 2011 and a similar drop of 7.74-percent in the Violent CSI.

14th from 7th sounds good except when you consider the total number of cities is 239.
It really means 225 cities out of 239 are safer places than Prince George to live.
Not a statistic to hang your hat on.

Your right Resident, but it’s a start in the right direction. It would be pretty disheartening if we went from 7th to 4th. I’ll 7th to 14th and feel good about it

I would love to know how many of the crime stats pertain to people that already have criminal records. If there are a high percentage of people that are repeat offenders than if you think about it we have some bad apples and the city as a whole is still pretty good.

Do they still need to work at making it better, sure they do. But I have travelled to a number of different cities in Canada and PG today doesn’t feel any more dangerous than say Edmonton. Edmonton by the way ranked 19th on Maclean’s list.

So the roads in PG are getting better, the crime stats are coming down. Now all we need are the business people in this town to make their buildings look nice and this City might be a decent place to live……

7th to 14th. The sad thing about this is if you look at the full article posted in the Citizen you will see the drop in violence but a 55% increase on sexual assualts against children. Anyways you look at it PG is worse then before. Obviously now turning into a pedophile haven since 20 incidents have occured already. Pretty bad IMO

Isn’t it amazing what can be done with figures?

“I would love to know how many of the crime stats pertain to people that already have criminal records.”

Why would Prince George be any different than other cities?

Great! Now were not even good at crime.

PG is like Fly Tape for morons and criminals. Get out while you can, it’s worth it.
