Bates Has Irons in the Fire

Wednesday, August 8, 2012 @ 3:58 AM
Prince George, B.C.- City Manager Derek Bates says it was his decision to end his employment with the City of Prince George. He has completed one three year contract term, and the second comes to an end at the end of this year. “Although Mayor and Council offered to renew my contract, I declined.” says Bates.

His decision, announced last Friday,  gives the City 5 months to find a new Manager, Bates says under the terms of his contract, he really only had to give two months notice.

The succession plan has yet to be established. When asked what plans were in place to find a new Manager, Bates said “That is up to Mayor and Council, I would imagine they will have a meeting to talk about it.”

The next scheduled meeting of Council is on the 20th of this month, and this matter will likely be discussed at an in camera session in the afternoon before there is any public discussion.

As for Bates, he says he and his wife have plans to do some travelling   in the new year, then, he will  be examining his options. “I do have, as they say, some irons in the fire” says Bates. He says he does have something   in mind and it will likely require he and his family to leave Prince George.

Bates has served under three different Mayor’s and Councils since starting his job as City Manager in 2007. Prior to that, he had been with the Regional District of Fraser Fort George for 18 years in roles that included department head and eventually Chief Administrator.

I heard Dan Rogers is applying for the job!

Why would he want to leave Prince George?? All these civil servants expound on how great Prince George is, however once they no longer have the cushie job, its time to move on.

An in camera session….. Fantastic, that means that everyone will know what was said once Skakun gets to the meeting!!!

Palopu …. the job opportunities for people working at the higher levels whether private or public are quite limited in PG. It is a small town.

Mobility is required if you have special experience …..

By the same token, one we has to look outside of PG to get special skills/experience.

Gee whiz! After reading this kinda stuff I automatically start thinking of that tune called “Alberta Bound”. “It’s good to be Alberta bound”. A toe tapper. That’s what it is.

The city has five months to find a new manager. Let us see if the sky will fall if we don’t hire another one. As for the guy, well, one door closes another door opens. That’s the way the world works.

Well I wish Derick and his family all of the happiness the future has in store for him and his family. As for Brian Skakun I hope he has the tenacity to hang in there until the next civic election and this time he goes for Mayor.
