Sunday, August 12, 2012 @ 7:53 AM
Prince George, B.C. – The B.C. Forest Service Wildfire Management Branch reports 29 active forest fires burning in the province as of today, 19 of them in the Prince George Fire Centre.

The largest, for both the province and the region, is the Suhm Creek fire in the very northeast corner of B.C., which has charred 7939 hectares so far. There have been 898 fires in the province since the beginning of April, covering 20,193 hectares. The bulk of that area, 18,344 hectares, has been consumed by the 257 fires recorded in the Prince George Fire Centre.

There were just 105 fires in the PGFC in all of 2011, which went down as one of the slowest fire seasons on record. The entire province recorded 646 fires for the entire year, with the firefighting tab at $66.7 million
