Weekend Activities in the Sunshine

Saturday, August 18, 2012 @ 5:02 AM
Prince George, B.C. – Residents and visitors alike can take advantage of the great weather by attending a few outdoor events in the city this weekend.

First off, the Canadian Diabetes Association is holding its Picnic in the Park today. It runs from 2 to 7pm at the Fort George Park bandshell and features live entertainment, lots of food and plenty of fun activities. All proceeds go to support diabetes research and education in the Northern BC region.

On Sunday the Northern Sport Centre is hosting “Storm the Hill”, a day full of events and activities for the entire family. All money raised there will go to the Lakeland Fire Assistance Fund.

Also on Sunday, the Downtown Business Improvement Association holds its annual Summerfest to showcase what the downtown area has to offer. It runs from 11a.m. to 4p.m. Sunday on Third and Fourth Avenues. There’s going to be all kinds of family entertainment, including a fish pond, a comedic magician, the Lollipop Girls, Prince George’s own Sound Addiction and The Statistics, and, one of the big highlights, The Taste Pavillion.

It will feature sample-sized portions from the menus of 16 local restaurants and showcase just how many great eateries we have in the city.

And 70 years ago this weekend Canada had its worst military catastrophe ever (caused by Britain’s refusal to follow through with planned navel and air support)… despite the catastrophe for Canadians at Dieppe it was instrumental in saving the Russian people from an ethnic cleansing campaign during their nations darkest hours… giving the Russians the breathing room they desperately needed to reorganize, and at the same time causing their enemy to redirect huge amounts of forces to the now threatened western front thereby causing the most monumental strategic defeat of the war for the Germans sealing their fate.

At least that is how Russians are taught in their schools when they learn of the ‘Patriotic War’ as they called it… Canada being the only country given any real credit by the Russians for selfless sacrifices of which Russians were the beneficiaries… thereby giving Canada a special place in Russian hearts that is acknowledged even 70 years later.

Where is Northern Sports Center? Don’t know where I’ve been. I expect someone changed the name of something that has been here for years, but I am drawing a blank.

There is a Show & Shine in Hixon today too.

The Northern Sports Center is up at the University. I think. :)
