Prince George, BC – Despite sunshine in the forecast this weekend, the Prince George Fire Centre is not anticipating a corresponding upswing in fire activity.

Fire Information Officer, Jillian Chimko, says, "We received quite a bit of rain throughout the week in different areas of our fire centre, so we actually don’t expect a very active weekend."

"We’ll definitely have crews on stand-by and things like that to cover off if we do get any new fires," she says. "But all of our fires of note are receiving rain and have in the past 48-hours – between five-millimetres to some of them getting up to 20-millimetres – so we expect them to be quiet for the weekend."

There are 14 fires of note, due to their visibility or potential threat to public safety, and all are burning in the Fort Nelson Fire Zone. Chimko says three 3-person initial attack crews from the Yukon continue to help out Wildfire Management crews in the region, along with locally contracted crews.

But, she says, a bunch of crews have been released from the largest complex of fires, the Capot-Blanc complex.  (Photo at right shows large patches of charred land as those fires continue to smolder in spots.  The two blazes that are part of the complex have spanned six-thousand hectares, north of Fort Nelson.  courtesy BC Wildfire Management Branch)

"Things are starting to cool down overnight, so we’re hoping it stays like this and things start to calm down, and wind down, for the season."
