BCGEU Picket Lines Up Today

Wednesday, September 5, 2012 @ 3:59 AM
Prince George, B.C.-   Picket lines will be up today at all Provincial Government  sites  in Prince George and 152 other communities across the province. Members of the BCGEU , are taking the action to press their demands for a fair contract.

Last week, BCGEU President Darryl Walker announced the one day action will see picket lines established at 1785 government sites across BC although members will maintain essential services.

The BCGEU is pressing for a two year contract that would give them a 3.5% increase in the first year and a cost of living increase in the second. Walker says the strike action is to show the Government “ there will be no more falling behind for government workers.”

But B.C.’s Minister of Labour, Margaret MacDiarmid has said there will be no increase offered, that she is holding to a planned  net zero contract.

The strike action today involves the BCGEU, Professional Employees Association and the Canadian Office and Professional Employees. In all, there will be 27 thousand workers taking part in the one day action.

The strike is expected to impact the courts, ICBC, liquor stores, corrections and social workers .

And most of them are there to take their kids to first day of school.

Is that all they want? Why is the govt so mean spirited?

Get back to work! You are not falling behind the private sector.

Apparently, the private sector now lags behind the government, especially when it comes to benefits and pensions. There is also less job security for most non governmental employees.
metalman.

I can only agree to no increase if they politicians follow the same protocol, which they havent, so why should they expect the same from people who have real jobs ?

An meanwhile the filthy rich CEO’s of the “private sector” (when was the most recent bail-out?” and the exclusive “one percent” sit back and rub their hands together in glee as the rest of us rip each other apart for the scraps, essentially continuing to chip away at what is left of the middle class….

You know, those working people supporting their families on the big bucks of 60 grand a year (1/3 goes to taxes – not many loop holes, for these folks) and the opportunity to own a modest home, take their kids to the doctor and a dentist, attend school and then after 50 or 60 years of working (if one lives that long), the ability to retire above the poverty line. YEAH, what are these lazy union workers fighting for…get back to work.

Who said anything about lazy union workers?

I wonder how much the CEOs’ @ ICBC, BC Ferries make?

That is a very good question. And if somebody wants their income, they should apply for their job.
