Friday Free for All, September 7, 2012

Friday, September 7, 2012 @ 12:00 AM

It was back to school, and back to routine as the  summer holiday season comes to close.

Another week is wrapping up and that means it is time for the Friday Free for All

You pick the topic, but as always, there are three simple rules that must be followed:

Keep it clean

Keep it legal

No bullying of other posters

Have a great sunny and warm Friday!

Well with the kids packing up each morning and heading off to school – I would just like to say one thing – Please slow down in school zones

I had an “old fart” moment the other day.

I was at the bank, picking up some US cash for a short trip across the border. Making small talk, I told the teller I was going to a concert, and needed some walking around money.

She asked who I was going to see. “Blondie and Devo”, I replied.

“Never heard of either of them”, she said.

I still have a bruise from where my jaw hit the floor.

Pylot Project,

I had the very same happen to me last June, It was nice though to go to that concert and be surrounded by “old” rockers like myself.

On another note, I wonder if the R.C.M.P. could start enforcing the MVA regulation regarding non stock headlights. This is a serious issue that’s becoming more prevalent.

Some of these people with non stock bulbs in stock headlights are blinding even in sunlight. And no I am not a little car driving guy. My rig is actually lifted, There is no reason in the world to have light shining up at my eye level.

Problem with these no stock headlights is more people do not know they still have to be properly aimed . They are way brighter but aimed properly they would not be so bad for oncoming traffic. I use them only on my motorcycle and that is purely for night riding when a stock headlamp is not enough. I also only use an 80/100 bulb which is not too bright for oncoming traffic when aimed properly.

To those who travel the University Hill Bypass in the wee hours of the morning: Slow down, get off your phone and pay attention. Tuesday morning, I walked by a dead moose, with nice big antlers…you hunters would have been disappointed to see such spoil. This morning, I walked by a dead deer. Four days and 2 dead animals. Priceless. This is a high animal traffic area, I see their tracks on the walkway everyday. To the City, people are untrainable…but animals can be trained. Time to put up fencing and create a tunnel for the safety of both drivers and animals.

As I watch the new RCMP building go up. I am wondering where will they be parking all of the police cars and the workers’ cars. The parking area on-site will only hold 20-30 cars. Does anyone know where the other cars will be parked?

CuriousKat, fabulous idea about the tunnel or maybe an overpass like they have in Jasper and Banff. Something must be done to protect these animals from our vehicles.

Love the “old fart” moments. Personally I don’t think knowing who Blondie and Devo makes me old (am still in the 40’s) but I can remember being 20-something and thinking 40+ was old.

My “old fart” moment came one day when I bent down to pick something up on the floor and forgot why I bent down. LOL!

Re: The UNBC speedway

They spent how much on the road up that unstable side hill and “PAVED” a bike path, yet there was no thought or funding for a couple of critter underpasses.

What a shame that now those critters are deathrace 2012 targets.

it is the same most everywhere. “We” build roads through wilderness with nary a thought about the impact (no pun) on animals and their travels.

IMHO critter tunnels should be a mandatory requirement for any road projects.

Instead of doing the right thing such as this, they reduce animal collision by fencing off the mineral licks beside the highway to discourage critters from being near the road.

PROHIBITION DOES NOT WORK. Prohibition helped organized crime grow in the 20’s and 30′ when it was alcohol, and is doing the same thing with prohibited recreational substances. Prohibitions are killing animals and causes human traffic injuries as well as untold dollars in damages to vehicles with the costs associated with emergency services.

The point of the above paragraph is only to illustrate the effects of prohibition. Not to instigate a tired discussion on decriminalization.

“We” need to stop the insanity and start working with the flow of life and not just barricade and bully our way to our sanitary view of the world.

“Something must be done to protect these animals from our vehicles.”

How about we stop handing out driver’s licenses like they’re a prize in a Cracker Jack box? (Following the ‘old’ fart’ theme here today).

For example, if you’re incapable of comprehending the “Keep Right Except To Pass” signs on the Hart you shouldn’t be allowed to drive.

Actually, animal tunnels/underpasses do not work. The animals will not use them because of the noise in the tunnels when vehicles drive over them. It is actually amazing how much noise is in those kind of tunnels. Just check out the 2 tunnels for pedestrians on Ospika and Hwy 16 to hear how loud and unnatural the noise is.

The tunnel idea was tried and abandoned. They now use the overhead trails/passes.

I would like to put out a reminder to the good citizens of Prince George to clean up their fruit trees and any other matter that can attract bears. I saw a house in my neighborhood, which is located on a major greenway/wildlife thoroughfare, that harvested a lot of the apples from their apple tree but left them on the ground in a large pile. Plenty of people, including a lot of children, pass by this house when out for a walk and I think it endangers us all when a bear attractant like that is left out.

I will be contacting the Bear Aware program about these people and probably somewhere like the Salvation Army or St. Vincent’s so they could collect these apples and use them for human food.

How silly can it get, an animal overpass on Tyner Blvd? First off the speed limit could be to high and second its equally as deadly for the driver of a vehicle that hits a moose as it is for the animal. The simple solution is to slow down and live.

Another question is why is the traffic volume so high on Tyner Blvd? Some of the traffic appears to be joy riding for what ever reason. It does not appear to be students as much of it bypasses the University turn off..

The City spent a ton of money on paving the foot path that runs along the Blvd. Lets not get another idea of building an animal overpass. It would also mean that it be fenced.
Cheers

Retired 02, I think some people drive that route because it is a more scenic route than Ospika. I know I like to drive it sometimes just to see the view of the City (including City lights at night).

Also, while an overpass (or two or three) is probably not fiscally possible, it is certainly not a silly idea.

It would be nice to see more police out targetting dangerous and stupid drivers. I personally would like a cop stationed at the traffic circle at the end of the Cameron Street Bridge to teach some of the drivers how to use the intersection.

I am constantly surprised at how many drivers come off the Cameron Street bridge (going North) give the right of way to the traffic coming off the PG Pulp Road. I think some do it out of courtesy but what about the courtesy they should be extending to the drivers behind them on the bridge that could be rearended by their “curteous” behaviour?

The fact is, traffic circles are an efficient and safe way to keep traffic flowing in every direction. But,if drivers don’t know how to navigate traffic circles
safely, they can easily become a high collision location.

Its simular to a four way stop the first person at the yield sign proceeds into the circle, everyone to the right then proceeds in order, yielding to the person already within the circle.

Sorry if I happened to delay you by 2 or 3 seconds- don’t follow so close and you shouldn’t rear end anyone. Remember-if you rear end someone you are in the wrong.

Good luck getting an animal overpass. Pedestrian overpasses are much more needed in other parts of the City.

“Sorry if I happened to delay you by 2 or 3 seconds- don’t follow so close and you shouldn’t rear end anyone. Remember-if you rear end someone you are in the wrong.”

2 or 3 seconds is nothing; the average moron coming off the bridge sits there at the roundabout -completely oblivious- for at least 10 seconds.

And what’s with these idiots who can’t signal when they’re approaching their exit? Are there really that many stupid people with driver’s licenses in this city? Is it the something in the air? Or the water??? :)

If you hit them in the drivers door in a roundabout then THEY are in the wrong – and this is what I see repeatedly by the pulpmill road 5pm crew, they just go and to heck with anyone in the circle already.

red2b, I don’t care about your supposed “2 or 3 seconds” delay. That I can afford. It’s the person rear-ending me that I don’t want. What I am saying is that your “2 or 3 seconds” delay is dangerous to those who have the right of way.

You – red2b – are exactly the type of person who needs a lesson in driving in traffic circles.

I don’t mind if you extend a courtesy “you go first” when no one else is behind you BUT you have a responsibility to the people behind you to drive according to the rules of the road.

“You – red2b – are exactly the type of person who needs a lesson in driving in traffic circles.”
By showing a little common courtesy all of sudden I need a lesson? I know the rules of traffic circles very well. If I am to show “you go first” only when there is no one behind me why can’t that car wait and get in behind me?
Half the time coming off the bridge you have to wait because some moron coming from the west does not signal that he is exiting on the bridge.

Another issue is the traffic coming off the Cameron St. bridge doesn’t slow down entering the traffic circle. At peak hours it is a straight line of traffic backed up to the overpass that tailgates it’s way across the bridge, not allowing vehicles the chance for entry from Pulpmill Rd. Oh yeah and hitting someone in the driver’s door doesn’t put you in the right if you are speeding coming off of the bridge. So slow down and play nice :)

I agree that some “courtesy” can cause more harm than good is some cases. If everyone was consistent in following the rules of the road everyone else would know what to expect from other drivers. (An impossibility I know) Faxman is right IMO. Slitting hairs here but it’s actually a Roundabout not a traffic circle, theres a difference.

Another blurb on the moose situation on University Way and Tyner. I see they changed those signs to the standard boring ones. I like the ones in this video better.

Doogood, you got that right!

If the uni can figure out how to get a taxpayer paid grant to study an animal overpass and tie that into a climate change study the money will flow for the overpass. Just look at that heating plant for example.

“For example, if you’re incapable of comprehending the “Keep Right Except To Pass” signs on the Hart you shouldn’t be allowed to drive.”

Ditto for going over the posted MAXIMUM speed!

Traffic in the circle has the right of way. If one gave way while in the circle to pulp mill traffic in Australia you will be voted number one by the car behind you.

Re: School zones. How many mothers have to be charged with speeding in a school zone before they get the message. Had a lady driver a half car length behind all the way through a school zone today, with a kid in the car!.
In January, I was driving down First Ave., signal light on to turn left on to a residential street and a woman in an SUV passed me on the left! With two kids in the vehicle. Had I not checked my side mirror, I hate to think what could have happened to the child in the front passenger seat. Mothers, keep your kids safe, give yourself time to drop off your kids, don’t commit foolish acts that endanger your precious children.

Anyone tired of hearing from women how great they are are at multi-tasking? Especially when they are driving. My God! A photographer could make a movie on this one.

“”For example, if you’re incapable of comprehending the “Keep Right Except To Pass” signs on the Hart you shouldn’t be allowed to drive.”

Ditto for going over the posted MAXIMUM speed!”

If we got rid of the idiots who can’t understand a simple concept like “Keep Right…” we could set the speed limit at a rate that competent drivers could handle.

Then of course, drivers like NoWay would have to use the bus and the rest of us would get to work quicker :)

Kudos to the Labor Day Classic people for going so far as to spray paint over their orange direction arrows with grey paint. Hard to even see them now. Very classy. Having said that, it’s to bad the District energy people could not have thought of this. We spent thousands to have the decoritive bricks put on the George St sidewalks, an now for years we get to see all the measurments spray painted on them. Just wondered why they didn’t think of this? Could they not have been painted on the street instead? Just saying..
Enjoy the weekend everyone and be safe.
