Buzzing it Off For Cancer Research

Wednesday, September 12, 2012 @ 3:54 AM
Prince George, B.C.- They are calling it “The Big Honkin’ Head Shave”  and it’s all in the name of charity.

Tomorrow, between noon and 2, students at the main campus of the College of New Caledonia will be buzzing off their locks. It is  a fundraiser for the Cops for Cancer Tour de North, which raises money for paediatric cancer research and Camp Goodtimes.

“We’re really excited to hold an event like this since cancer affects everyone, including members of our Students’ Union,” said Jasmine Bhatti, external co-ordinator for CNC’s Students’ Union. “We don’t have a fundraising goal, however every penny helps. We just want to make more people aware of the cause.”

Two hairdressers from Studio R will be on hand to shave people’s heads. Some participants have already registered and are currently gathering pledges.

“This event is the first of its kind in celebration of 15 years of Cops for Cancer in B.C.,” said Elyse Elmslie, health promotion co-ordinator for the Canadian Cancer Society’s northern region in Prince George. “Head shaves are popular fundraisers and this is a chance to get everyone together at once to do it.”

The Cops for Cancer Tour de North hits the road on Friday, as members of the team bike their way to Prince Rupert collecting donations for the cause along the way.
