Wednesday, September 12, 2012 @ 3:56 AM
Prince George, B.C.- Housing starts for August in Prince George were down from the same month in 2011, but the Year to Date figures are still above the mark for the same period in 2011.

In August, Canada Mortgage and Housing is reporting just 9 single detached homes were started in Prince George, down from the 24 started in August of 2011. That reduced the monthly starts numbers by 24%.

The January to August 31st figures show there have been 100 single detached starts so far, for an increase of 28% and a 16% increase in multiple housing starts. The total starts for 2012 are up 24% over the same eight months of 2011.

"The pace of new home construction remains on track with CMHC’s forecast for the year," said Carol Frketich, CMHC’s BC Regional Economist. Multiple-family housing accounted for three-quarters of all urban starts in  B.C. in August and for the first eight months of the year, a higher share than in 2011. CMHC predicts an 11.8 per cent increase in multiple-family construction in 2012, with a stable level of single- detached home starts.
