Quesnel, B.C. – A Quesnel area First Nation and a mining firm have come to terms on a Cooperation Agreement regarding a mine development near Likely.

The deal between the Lhtako Dene and Spanish Mountain Gold addresses the involvement of the First Nation during the environmental assessment and permitting review process for the Spanish Mountain gold project.

Under the terms of the deal, the company says it will recognize and respect the Lhtako Dene’s asserted aboriginal rights and title in the area of the proposed mine and the First Nation will recognize and respect Spanish Mountain Gold’s rights and interests in the exploration and development of the property.

Lhtako Dene Chief Clifford LeBrun says his nation is pleased with the relationship developed with the company in respect of shared territories.

“It is extremely important to the Lhtako people that there is an honest and transparent relationship that is developed between us, with consistent communications and substantive consultation. We look forward to future production and anticipate that our interest will be recognized and the benefits shared equitably."

The agreement will provide capacity support for the Lhtako Dene for its involvement in the environmental and permitting process as well as training, employment, and business opportunities. Spanish Mountain Gold says both parties have committed to negotiating a detailed impacts and benefit arrangement associated with the construction, operation, and reclamation of the mine.
