Movie In The Park a Huge Success

Sunday, September 16, 2012 @ 4:41 AM
Prince George, B.C. – Anyone who thinks there is nothing to do on a late summer’s eve in Prince George would have had that misconception thoroughly debunked had they turned out at Fort George Park Saturday night.

Without exaggeration, literally thousands of city residents packed the area near the bandshell to watch the movie Madagascar 3, presented by Enhance PG, Fortis BC and Fresh Air Cinema Group. Heading down 17 Avenue toward the park it was easy to see that parking was going to be a problem. Every available space on every side street was taken. 17th was full from the park to Hemlock and people were parking as far away as Patricia Boulevard.

Fortis and Fresh Air are offering free outdoor movie nights in parks, parking lots on beaches and barges right across the province. Fresh Air uses a 4-storey high inflatable screen.

Here in Prince George Investors Group stepped up to the plate to collect non-perishable food donations which will go to the St. Vincent de Paul Society food bank.

It was quite obvious that the local population took to the idea of taking the whole family to a FREE outdoor event that everyone could enjoy.  And, given the bright sunny weather forecast for the weekend and into next week, there was little doubt things would cool off substantially with the clear skies during the movie.   But it seemed people came prepared, with blankets and coats, chairs and whatever munchies they wanted to snack on.

The announcer leading into the showing of the movie wanted to know if people would like this to become an annual event, and judging by the thunderous response, this reporter wouldn’t be at all surprised to see a sequel next year at the same location.

I’m really happy this was a success in PG. I kept thinking all summer long that our Cineman Under The Stars would rock back at home. (can one “rock” at a movie?)

This is the kind of little stuff that kids will remember as they grow up.

“Cinema Under The Stars”…. I need coffee.

I bet the thieves loved it too!

Thieves? And what is different about stealing from cars parked at a park and at an indoor theatre …. and what is different about an audience inside a theatre and outide?

Do you have personal experience you would like to share with readers?

This was a great deal of fun but, I miss looking over the steering wheel and the distortion a cracked windsheild brings!

It really was fun and I thank all those who made this happen.

Great event and it was so nice to see all of the kids and families enjoying themselves….g.d. cold near the end but will know better for next time (warmer jackets!). Hopefully will be a next time. These types of events are golden as they bring everyone together (visited with tons of people) and create memories for the kids (family and childhood).

Thanks Enhance PG and all of the sponsors, volunteers. I saw many volunteers and without the combination (organizers, sponsors, volunteers) these things just cannot happen…great event for first time out.
